Pros
What Nuvalence does right makes makes up for a lot of it's other issues. Nuvalence has always been a remote first company which makes it a very attractive company to work with. Additionally they have been taking steps towards a more inclusive culture by implementing salary transparency across most bands.
Cons
-DISCLAIMER- I can only speak for the two teams I worked with at Nuvalence. As a medium sized consulting firm, there are many teams that I did not directly work with and can not comment on their structure. I am taking the the aggregated experiences from my two teams and applying what seemed to be present across both of them. One of the largest issues I've seen at Nuvalence is the work life balance. Burnout wasn't just expected, it was glorified. When people would put in 80 hour weeks to keep projects alive (more often than not) they were referred to as heroes. The company values "Unreasonable Outcomes" and accomplishes this with heroic efforts rather than adequate resourcing. This leaves many employees burnt out, stressed, and in a persistent state of fear. Another large con of Nuvalence is that it allows borderline abusive management practices to exist, as long as deadlines are met. This comes back to the value of "Unreasonable Outcomes". I remember hearing the founder of the company say "Technical Excellence is not enough to justify your position here". This was the general attitude displayed by leadership, one that is never satisfied, that things can always be better so why celebrate any wins? This pattern is one that shows that there is no acceptable base line, exceptional is the average, therefore everyone must be exceptional. While this mentality can be fantastic for growth this lead to some very chaotic interactions between engineering and management. If Management were to set an "Unreasonable Outcome" for engineering that would not be possible, this puts engineering in a position of being average (Not meeting expectations) if they somehow pull off the impossible. In addition to such I have seen numerous employees yelled at, chewed out and put down after working over 60 hours in a week due to expectations not being met. This bullying mentality in management was something I saw across the company at large.
