Pros

You get to work with an interesting business and very large systems. You work as a fullstack software engineer, which means your daily base tasks range from analysis, to development and documentation. The majority of people is really great and helpful.

Cons

You will always work for the same client and in their facilities. The conditions in which you work are awful: you have no proper room to eat your lunch, the “kitchen” has one microwave which is never clean as well as the fridge, WC are not clean and sometimes the smell gets to the room in which you are working, in the summer temperature can get to 40 degrees and you have no working AC, desks are probably more than 20 years old and full of dust as well as the rest of the room. You never have the time you need to develop, no matter the estimation you give your manager. There is never the opportunity to improve applications, because you never have time. You’re blessed if you can convince your manager to give you time to do some refactoring or automated tests. Client requests come at any time and are always met regardless the amount of people available, so prepare to work more than 8 hours and yet, they won’t be enough. The tech stack is rigid, if you’re “lucky” you’ll get to work with java 7/8 with spring, if you’re not you’ll most likely do some bug fixing on java 5 applets probably 10/15 years old. No tech training is given, only some soft skill related ones. If you get out of the company in less than 2 years they will charge you the amount they spent with you, even if you didn’t ask for any of those trainings. This is not in your signed contract, only on a document that they give you after you sign the contract.

Thank you for your review. As a team of software engineers who like to think and have genuine passion for work, this must be reflected in our company’s culture. So we are very pleased to hear that you liked the projects, systems and team that you worked with. We take the working conditions really seriously, and since most of our teams work in our clients facilities, we are continuously monitoring their working conditions. Most of the time we must find the best balanced solution between our vision of a great working space and the client’s vision of the same space, this should never be below of what is a comfortable set of working conditions. The problems you mentioned occured in a particular client facility. Lately this facility has been subjected to major improvements including AC and furniture renovation. As for lunch space and conditions, we love it when our co-workers join us for lunch at our office, which is located 5 minutes away from the mentioned location. This is an area of concern to us, so we take every feedback very seriously. Needless to say that it is not always possible to have a critical system up and running, with the high level of demand we work with, and include non planned activities in the project plan. As stated, we work with interesting businesses and very large systems. That is why innovation areas, strategic project framework improvements and techs in which we want to improve our knowledge as a team, are planned annually. They are represented as company goals and guidelines and are presented to all employees in the company’s kick off, each year. By the end of the year, through a combination of company’s results and employee performance, each employee is financially acknowledged by the effort invested in the pursuit of the company’s annual goals. Furthermore in an effort to improve the work/life balance, we allow the conversion of after hours work in extra time off. To start working in our team, everyone gets a 40 hours technical welcome pack, with training contents designed to help get into our tech stack and development framework. It is not true that if someone leaves the company, he or she has to reimburse the amount spent in training. The training of employees is understood as an investment in the future of the company and personal growth. So, in some specific training, if the employee leaves the company in the period up to 2 years after the training, our company policy states that he or she should reimburse some amount, proportionally to the remaining time. The company policy is a regulation, known to everybody in the company. We are sorry to hear that our training investment, during the year you were part of our team, didn’t work for you. This review is a valuable input to our continuous improvement. We are all dealing with a new work paradigm. Since you have ideias how to improve it, I invite you to discuss this subject with us, please email me directly to msousa@opensoft.pt.

Pros

Great environment for learning and professional growth. You get exposure to different projects and technologies, which helps build a solid foundation. Supportive colleagues and a good place to start a career in software engineering.

Cons

Compensation is relatively low compared to the market, especially considering the responsibilities. Salary progression could be faster to better match experience and performance.

Pros

Teams communication is very good, you will learn a lot. Everyone is willing to help you if you have a problem. You will work at the entire stack, from Database to frontend, which is great to learn. If you are good, interested in growing and in the projects success you will have lots of opportunities to develop your skills further. If you are focused and interested in growing they have a good career progression.

Cons

Some projects are old and have older technologies, but you will not work for long on these projects, and there's a constant effort to update those projects, so it's not a big cons. Unfortunately, they don't have projects with cloud technologies like AWS, if you want to work with AWS services that's not a place for you. They can't compete salary wise with big international companies, but for your first years you should focus on learning.
