Pros

The team is very supportive, but everyone is burnt out from the toxic work culture and micro management by the senior leadership

Cons

Senior leadership is manipulative, practice favouritism, micro-manages the employees, makes you work beyond your working hours (ex. the male of senior leadership doesn't shy away from phone calling female employees at 12am and asking them to work), no career growth once you join, the top 2 in the management make you feel small and talk down to you in the name of "feedback". Almost no salaries increments for employees, most of the funds go into the salaries of the top 2-3 people. Over and above all this, current employees are being forced to put fake (good) reviews on Glassdoor. This practice needs to be restricted, this is extremely unethical.

Peepul Response

We are happy to hear that you experienced a supportive team culture at Peepul but equally disappointed that we did not fully meet your expectations as an organization. I would appreciate the chance to address some of your concerns: First, we never ask any current teammates or alums to make fake reviews on Glassdoor. However, we encourage teammates to share their reflections about hiring, culture, work experience, etc., so that external people interested in working with us get an overview of our processes, systems, and culture to determine if they want to work with us. We also see this portal as an additional route to hear anonymous feedback, which helps us build a better workplace. As you may know, we have a salary band for each role (from an entry-level to a Senior Leadership role). We extend the offer to candidates based on several considerations/ matrix (e.g., education, relevant work experience, fit to role and culture, etc.) and determine compensation within the band itself. We also have an annual performance increment provision, where we revise everyone's salary. In the last five years, we have provided a significant hike to our team, which has been higher than the sector average. With regard to our financials, please note that our audited financial statements are on the website and provide a sense of how our grants are spent across our team and our programmes. On your comment regarding micromanagement and feedback, we want to let you know that at Peepul, all teammates support one another's professional development by providing mentorship and feedback and helping each other identify their areas of strength and improvement. This should not be interpreted as micromanagement or showing disdain but rather as a team effort to support your success. We encourage team members to be open with their managers and express any areas of improvement or differences in operating style, so that your manager can work collaboratively with you, in a way that works for both. Your comments regarding being manipulative and practising favouritism, calling teammates mid at night, are something we hear for the first time as feedback. I would love to talk directly about this, so feel free to email me at rashmi.pandey@peepulindia.org, or we can get on a call as I want to understand what incidents made you think so and where this could be occurring and how to improve. Thank you, Rashmi Pandey

Pros

Peepul took a chance on me without a conventional background in communications, and that bet went both ways; they gave me room to grow, and I delivered. Within a year, I went from figuring out the basics to genuinely contributing to the work. What I appreciated most was that once I proved myself, I was treated as a peer, not just a junior hire. The org rewards initiative and doesn't box you in by your job title. If you're willing to put in the work, there's real space to evolve fast.

Cons

The early months were tough. Without a traditional background, building credibility took time and deliberate effort. The org does hand-hold you for the initial phase but if you come in without domain experience, expect to earn your seat at the table rather than be given one.

Pros

Supportive work culture with opportunities to learn, take ownership, and contribute meaningfully to education and gender and inclusion projects. Collaborative teams and encouraging leadership make it a rewarding workplace.

Cons

You may need to budget for cat treats. One of the MP team's unofficial feline colleagues is a much-loved part of the organization and has successfully won over almost everyone. Resistance is usually futile! Being a cat lover is definitely an added advantage.
