Pros

1) Great benefits (if you ask anyone at PGW this will be at the top of the list) 2) Clear HR processes when jobs are posted internally, salary grades and duties are clearly outlined. It really helps to determine where you want to go in your career also removes some of the anxiety around negotiating pay. 3) Union. I have been on both "sides" of the fence and I can say the union does advocate for your rights as an employee. That does not mean that the Non-Union side is cutthroat but a lot of entry level positions are Union based and they are a real resource for newer employees. If you come in as a Union Employee and choose to continue to stay within the Union try to get involved and get to know your union reps. PGW has a lot of red tape and procedures, the union can help navigate. 4) Non-Union Management Staff is not out to get you. In fact, a lot of the Non Union staff were once Union employees or Union reps themselves. They know what it is like working in the street, call center, or Offices. It is just like everything else in life. If you give respect you get it back. I cannot tell you how many times I received help advice or mentorship from Managers while I was in the union.

Cons

1) Work life Balance: this is not a straight Con it really depends on the position you have. Remember PGW is a company that deals with a volatile and dangerous substance. Certain staff needs to be on call 24/7 and work odd shifts and hours. Also the customer facing positions like customer affairs can be especially difficult during "collections season" (Spring/summer)... If you don’t like the work life balance of your position only one thing you can do....look for another one. 2) The red tape: It takes a long time to get certain things done at PGW. Partially because of safety but also because it is an old company trying to slowly evolve with the times. It can be frustrating. 3) The Buildings: there is a vast difference in the Newer 800 building and the older 1800 building for obvious reasons. I know summer in 1800-4 was sweltering hot because the AC stopped working at times. 4) It’s a "family" business: It is not uncommon to meet a person who has multiple family members working for the company. Also gossip travels like wild fire here. This doesn't effect operation it just rubs me the wrong way.

Pros

Easy work guaranteed 40 hours a week great benefits no lay offs pension 457 or 401k paid sick days holidays and vacation days

Cons

You get penalized for using sick days to easy to lose progressions in the summer time the higher up have less work so they micromanage everything you do new rules are constantly being added it’s not a real union the union works for Pgw so it’s a conflict of interest when it comes time for them to defend you the company always puts the blame on you if they can never find a conclusive answer to a problem
