Pros

Food and housing provided….not the condition of those two factors but they are provided and so that’s at least convenient. Backcountry access 15% discount on store purchases Unique work experience

Cons

My biggest issue with philmont was the work environment. I worked there for one summer and two off seasons. The work environment has a culture of mutual admiration and arrogance. This is because too many of the wrong people are hired again and again. They do not care about the customer experience or even doing their own jobs. During training departmental leadership even said and I quote “You may look around and see things at Philmont that you don’t like or could be better…but we don’t wanna hear about it.” That mindset will be a downfall if it continues. Also as a woman I experienced lots of sexism and harassment, but when I tried reporting (up the chain too) it And I was retaliated against for trying to bring it to light. Women are NOT welcome or wanted at philmont, the majority of male staff male that very clear from day one that women are impeding on the Scout and staff experience. Full time management also doesn’t take care of their workers. Lazy staff seem to get promoted, and the few hard workers are always loaded with too much work. There are zero mental health resources. They’ll tell you “you can always go to the infirmary” but that’s also a lie. I went to the infirmary to see if I could get help with finding a professional in the area I could go see/talk to about my suicidal thoughts. At the infirmary I was told “uh, maybe try online?…I don’t know, I have a meeting soon.” Housing, as far as cabins, is abysmal. If you have a DUST ALLERGY you won’t make it. The cabins have years worth of mold, dust, and grime. And even though you’re an adult they can and will go through your room looking at your personal items. You will never have privacy in base camp. The food isnt appetizing and is the same every week, sometimes every couple days. NO such thing as work life balance. Pay is terrible, especially for the hours and labor they ask of the staff.

Philmont Scout Ranch Response
3y
We are very sorry to read this review about the experience you had at Philmont. All instances of harassment/discrimination reported to the Seasonal Personnel Office are taken seriously, investigated, and responded with appropriate action and retaliation in any form is not tolerated. Staff who experience any of these things, are asked to promptly report the situation to the Seasonal Personnel Office, Philmont administration, the Boy Scouts of America's National Office, or the anonymous reporting system through EthicsPoint (information on this is provided in the Seasonal Staff Handbook). If this was your experience, we would like to know more so that we can look further into it. Women and people of all walks of life should be welcome and supported at Philmont and anyone who disagrees with this is not welcome. We aim to create an environment that welcomes constructive feedback and are always working to improve the facilities and resources available to our staff through surveys, closing reports, and regular meetings with seasonal staff to prioritize areas of focus for future seasons. We are a camp and the environment of remote camp life is not for everyone. We try our best to set these expectations with all applicants through the interview process, staff handbook, preparedness seminars, and other resources. Our mission as an organization is to develop young leaders. This includes our seasonal staff. We place a lot of trust in our seasonal staff to gain experience through making decisions and leading their departments, however sometimes these seasonal leaders make mistakes or lose sight of our mission to change lives. We, as full-time management, take action to coach these seasonal leaders as they learn their roles. If ultimately it is decided their skills or mindset does not match our mission, we will make personnel changes for future seasons.

Extremely rewarding. Get to meet a lot of scouts from around the USA

Cons

Worked hard. Typically 4 days on and 1 day off with and 8 hour shift here and there. But you get to live your life through this job to the fullest.
