Pros

Flexible vacation policy that allows employees to take the time they need. Generous six-month parental leave, which employees do take advantage of. The newsroom continues to attract talented journalists and staff who care about the work.

Cons

Leadership often communicates that the company is performing well financially, but internal decision-making can feel opaque and reactive. Teams are frequently expected to execute without clearly articulated strategic priorities. Budget reductions or cancellations of previously planned initiatives can happen with little warning, making long-term planning difficult. Management culture in several areas is highly top-down. Decisions are often handed down rather than discussed, and there is limited space for constructive pushback. Advancement does not always appear tied to leadership effectiveness or operational competence, which can be discouraging for strong performers. Heavy emphasis on in-office presence. Most employees are required to be in the office four days per week, while some departments require five. This approach prioritizes physical presence over outcomes for many roles that could be done effectively in hybrid or remote environments. Remote employees, including those hired specifically as remote staff, can feel excluded from parts of company culture. In some cases, non-local employees were not included in major company events, such as the 2025 holiday party. The overall environment increasingly prioritizes visibility and compliance over trust and autonomy. Many talented employees ultimately leave for organizations that offer more flexibility and clearer leadership direction. The culture feels increasingly corporate and transactional compared with the collaborative and mission-driven environment the company once had.

Pros

A generous maternity leave policy of 6 months - but beware - you won't have a job to come back to. We've seen it many times.

Cons

I've been here long enough to see leadership lie straight to our faces numerous times. Getting screwed over isn't a matter of IF, it's a matter of WHEN.
