Pros

The work Portable does is truly great - their projects truly do help people in need. And the employees are amazing; I made many great friends working there.

Cons

Unfortunately, the business is unbelievably mismanaged. There is no positive culture fostered by management, projects always run over budget and people end up resourced in completely unsustainable ways, and it is generally a miserable place to work. Management have never listened to anyone when they say there are major problems, and they still pretend everyone is happy and there is no culture problem when there clearly is. Remuneration is also very poor, at 20-30% below market rates. There are some perks and non financial benefits, but they definitely in no way make up for the massive pay discrepancy. If you work at Portable you can expect to make a real difference through the work you get to do, but at the expense of your own mental health, stress levels, and very low salaries. It's not worth it.

Pros

- Meaningful work - Lovely colleagues - Work/life balance - Supportive culture

Cons

- Disconnect between management (especially CEO) and the realities of the work - Under-costing of projects, the pressures of which lands on the team doing the actual work - A lot of talking the talk without walking the walk - Mass redundancy came out of the blue (Portable was actively hiring right up until the redundancies were made) and affected people who were arguably best placed to take the company in the right direction. This implies questionable management decisions but all the blame was placed on “the market” with no accountability at management level - The response to redundancy seemed to focus primarily on PR as opposed to those affected - Limited opportunities for career advancement - Below market salary (at least for Senior level and below)
