Pros
Coworkers become close friends being down in the trenches together
Strong sense of journalism ethics among employees
New building has windows (old building did not and smelled like mold)
Strong sense of community in Inland Southern California
Good place for an entry-level position — lots of learning the first two years
Cons
Frequent layoffs
More emphasis on the bottom line than on doing good journalism
Out-of-touch Corporate bosses in Texas that don't have journalism experience, nor do they care to learn about their product
Little opportunity or encouragement for skill development — some employees were punished for taking community college classes because management thought if you improved yourself, you'd quit
Little opportunity for advancement, and some people who were promoted were not qualified for their new positions but were sent up the ladder because of favoritism
Too much emphasis on web hits via open comment boards on the website — it needs to be better monitored than it currently is
