Pros
Decent benefits, relaxed atmosphere, and interesting projects. Working with professors and students can be exciting and rewarding. The work-life balance is excellent with minimal overtime and a generous vacation policy.
Cons
Anyone other than tenured faculty are treated poorly. Base salary is low for comparable industrial positions, but benefits used to make up the balance. That is no longer the case. Many professors consider staff to be little more than useful furniture. Things that would get a person fired in industry are swept under the rug (if they are faculty). There is ineffective and incompetent management at the Dean and Department Head levels.
