Pros
I believe our salary is the highest of the base pay for PhD students on campus. While $33k may still seem low to some people, it is adequate for paying the bills and allowing some travel to see family and friends, unlike the PhD student salaries at some other universities.
Cons
It is often difficult to save money, unless you split housing/living costs with a roommate. And as always, there are some labs where student mental health is not valued. But I would say the majority are caring and supportive.
