Contract Engineering -- Gravestone for the old, Stepping Stone for the young. - Engineer RLA Engineering Employee Review

Pros

You contract/work with HP which has a good work life balance. The engineering work fun and challenging. Little corporate bullsh*t. You make your own hours, just get the job done. If you're young, then HP might hire you on as a full-time real employee with benefits. You can pretty much ignore your RLA manager with no consequences -- they don't wont to fire you because they're selling you monthly to HP. You are paid a salary.

Cons

You have no visibility of your Work Agreement that RLA has with HP. So RLA could be taking most your pay but you'd never know it. If your old, the HP will never hire you on as full time employee. No vacation time. 401K plan with very high fees (2% a year).

Pros

It's a job where you are the product. RLA sells your services to HP. You can ignore all your monthly meetings with your RLA manager, because what are they going to do? RLA will not fire you. They need you to work, because you are their revenue stream.

Cons

The RLA managers still try to micromanage you. If you travel on an HP business trip RLA tries to put you on a per diem, even though they just expense everything back to HP.
