Pros

Good experience for new nurses. Most nurses there are very helpful, as long as you stay on their good side. Great experience for learning respiratory ventilation/weaning/suctioning, with lots of practice. If you have an Associates degree they pay you the same as if you have a BSN.

Cons

Management has their favorites and it shows, the longer you work there the more you can get away with calling off on holidays and picking your own schedule, while everyone else has to work every other weekend and holiday. Management doesn't care to keep staff longterm, as I was told right after being hired by the manager, "This is a great place to learn nursing skills, after a year here you can go anywhere!" Also, everything falls on the nurses. They understaff the patient care technicians, it's not uncommon to see 10 patients to one pct. And if you work on the B1 unit, night shift nurses can be up to 8 patients, while the other units only have 6 patients max. Some respiratory therapists are always "busy" and they make it difficult to ask for help, even in emergencies. If you have a BSN, you don't get paid more than nurses with an associates degree.
