Cons

COVID-19: Chaotic management of the pandemic, which I recognize this is completely unprecedented, however, communication on updated guidelines come in extremely last minute. Nothing has been done in order to help employees be more successful at home. (We were sent home with our laptops and set of headphones, had to scramble to take home any other tech, which was extremely limited) Threatened with being forced to go back into the office if executive management deems you "not productive enough", confirmed COVID cases & exposure of employees not communicated to the rest of the office. BLM & Systemic Racism: Extremely disheartened as RP has yet to do anything other than an incredibly brief statement that eluded to some videos we can watch if we want to. This statement included a video from Taiwan Brown, the VP of Inclusion & Community, which I appreciated, so absolutely no fault to her. However, it was accompanied by a half-hearted, 2 sentence statement from the CEO which was performative at best. That’s it. No real actions taken, statement was STRESSED to be kept internal and confidential. Nothing said publically. Poor performative activism at best. PRIDE: RealPage is pushing a PRIDE initiative internally, which I think is amazing and 100% support. However, on the panel discussion they recently had that included people across other companies, including AT&T and Buildium, even the smallest things other companies mentioned they were doing in order to help make their workplaces more inclusive to the LGBTQ+ community, have not even been attempted by RealPage. Additionally, it feels hypocritical for them to stand up for the rights and inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community after such a dismissive stance and effort for the Black community.

I have read your post. I see that you don't recommend RealPage, don't approve of the CEO and don't like our outlook. You don't like how we have handled the pandemic, or pride initiatives or Black Life's Matter. You also don't know all the amazing things that this company has done to get our employees working through these tough times and how supportive we are with inclusion and the dollars we have donated to do so much good around the globe.. Teammates worked around the clock to transform a work in the office company to one where 97% of the population could work from home around the globe in just two weeks. We bought 1000's of laptops, ensured connectivity, held daily meetings by function, employees drove equipment to teammates homes, etc. . There were so many heroes that allowed others to work at all. Our customers and almost every teammate have been very grateful. To say that nothing was done to make our teammates successful is just false and totally uniformed. Let's also be clear, working from home is a privilege and not a right. We want all employees to be successful, but no business can afford to have employees go home and not perform. Would you disagree with that? If you can show me where one manager threatened an employee, I would like to know about it. You will be able to find Managers who have communicated that we encourage everyone to work from home and be productive. If you can not do this, then we need to explore why and work through that. We also track every potential and confirmed exposure and have a quarantined process in place. RealPage has also spaced all work stations out for social distancing and the buildings are being sanitized several times a day. Today coming in the office is on a voluntary basis and I expect it to continue until circumstances change. When they do we will communicate to all employees. On to BLM and systemic racism. I bet you don't know that RealPage has over a 90% approval rating through the engagement survey for respect as an individual. That is a fundamental behavior that we are very proud of. Taiwan Brown did an outstanding job of delivering our company's message, that we do not tolerate any behaviors that are racial motivated in any negative content. You want RealPage to be an activist company at a level that satisfies you. We made our feelings known and shared it with all employees. We stand by our beliefs and the message was very clear. If you think that our PRIDE initiative is amazing, then get behind it instead of looking for what is wrong. Yes we are working with AT&T on fast tracking their successes and they are excited and proud to work with us. They have also been doing this since 1975, long before RealPage was even a company. Buildium is a RealPage division not a separate company . Again, talk with Daryl Adams and you just might find out how you can get involved instead of trying to point out another grievance. I am glad that you like your co-workers, the gym and the coffee bar, we try very hard to create an interactive work environment Thank you for pointing that out. Sincerely, Kurt Twining

Pros

Good engineering tooling. Talented engineers and teammates. Flexible remote work.

Cons

I ran one of RealPage's larger engineering product teams for three years, hiring and developing more than half of the engineering managers and engineers on my organization. I believed I was building something that mattered. Instead of promoting the person already doing the work, leadership hired a lateral engineering manager alongside me. Over time, responsibility stayed with me while authority and support shifted elsewhere. I became the person expected to absorb every problem. My first manager used me to fill every gap instead of developing me. I was expected to handle support, incident response, production releases, coding, architecture, project management, and people management—all at the same time. My second manager sidelined me, criticized me, and focused on replacing me instead of developing me. I was once told I was "lucky to be useful, or I wouldn't still be here." That statement summed up the culture. Leadership expected constant availability while frequently being unavailable themselves. When leadership was out, I was expected to cover. I spent over a year supporting both U.S. and India time zones, making true time off nearly impossible. RealPage has incredibly talented people, but talented employees cannot overcome a culture where managers are consumed instead of developed. I loved building teams. I just wish the company had valued the people who built them.

Thank you for sharing such a candid and detailed account of your experience. We're glad the engineering tools, talent, and flexibility of remote work stood out positively, and we take seriously what you've described about being stretched across responsibilities without matching authority or support. No manager should feel they have to absorb everything alone, and your point about developing managers rather than overloading them is well taken. We'd welcome the chance to understand your experience further—please consider reaching out to your HRBP so we can address this directly. Thank you for the years you have invested in building your team.
