Rocket Science Consulting

Is this your company?

Never gonna get it. - Mission Engineer Rocket Science Consulting Employee Review

Pros

Relative freedom of schedule if you are good at managing your own time and pushing back on "red hot" emergencies that often are the exact opposite of that. It's consulting, so yes the culture is cool at the office but you're rarely there, therefore you get exposed to a lot of really great other places to eventually work at. The work done by this firm is relatively junior level, so if you are looking for comfortable work with a bit less than average pay for very little responsibility, this could be great for you.

Cons

Illusion of ownership, transparency and direction of the company. No matter what the consensus is, a closed door meeting between the incredibly absent CEO and his right hand (a former fitness instructor that is now in charge of company finances, with no formal training on that type of responsibility) will uproot policies and programs your team worked tirelessly to assemble and approve. These decisions are also typically tied to some kind of private or emotional episode the CEO has and feels is appropriate to share with the entire staff via email. No form of HR department (they tried it once and eliminated the role). No one will go to bat for you when you want to make claim on "unlimited" time off, about half a dozen failed attempts at peer review and pay assessment. Incredibly unresponsive "flight leaders" (their version of account manager) that seemingly do nothing and get paid 2-3 times more than the highest paid engineers on staff. The turnover is remarkably high given the disparity of pay among employees of the same roles - some field engineers get paid as little as 40K, others with the same workload get paid 65K in some of the rarer cases. The health insurance providers switched several times during my employment which made it very difficult for my family to settle in on a dedicated physician. The culture also promotes/encourages "not safe for work" material in their communication tools which have pushed many people right back out of the door as soon as they join, so be prepared for them to "assess" whether you are cool with that. The company's financials are seemingly always in turmoil given their strange approach to growth and their consistent loss of big clients. Many engineers go on to work at the clients they were originally assigned to due to better offers. Think of this place as a staffing agency.

Pros

People & Culture are outstanding, the work is fast paced and challenging, and you have autonomy to get the job done. What more could you ask? The haters on glassier (and i know who you are!) didn't fit the changes in the company, sour grapes. Management has done everything they said they were going to do for as long as I've been here, and are more transparent than anywhere I've ever worked. And the tone gets set at the top -- I just had an hour long conversation with the CEO about why he moved to Portland (we have an office there), why he moved back to SF, the future of the company, his philosophy on life -- the guy just puts it all out there. The management team is super positive and supportive, but not bossy -- if you are independent and don't need hand holding it's a great vibe. They have recently announced some changes to how we are structured to make it less management heavy, less non technical account manager types and more consulting, all of which are the right moves IMO. I like the people and the direction of this firm.

Cons

Pay isn't A++, but it's a small company and pays like one. I'd like some more firmed up HR processes, but they have been starting to do that over the last month and i love it and hate it.
