Pros

Lots of autonomy and opportunities for company travel.

Cons

You're autonomous because leadership is completely disengaged. There's no company direction or vision. Nothing is scaled. You're constantly pivoting projects, so nothing gets completed, and then you get blamed for it. No revenue growth. Leadership has big dreams but no desire to commit or invest in the necessary resources to get them there - they just dump it on the existing, overworked employees desperately trying to keep the company afloat. Pays well below market rate and benefits are behind (you earn 1 paid holiday per year - have to be at the company 8 years to get Christmas off as a paid holiday).

We welcome the feedback from this anonymous employee and appreciate them sharing their story and perspective, even if it is hard to hear. Unfortunately, not everyone demonstrates our core values to the extent necessary to be on the Rockton team. I am thankful this person appreciated their autonomy. And I'm thankful they appreciated our all-expenses-paid retreats to premier destinations for learning and fun. We do have a lot of fun when we travel. This person’s observations about leadership and vision have some merit. Not because of their suggestions, but more because of our inherent Passion to Grow, we have over the past year tightened our leadership style and invested heavily into outside assistance on how to lead a more effective organization. Our vision is clearer than ever, and our team has been responsive and excited to see where we are taking Rockton into both the near and distant future. We have a very strong culture. It is built on Integrity, Humility, Emotional Intelligence, and the Passion to Grow. Our culture is not a fit for everyone. Those who don’t embrace and demonstrate these values will not last on our team.

Pros

You're autonomous because leadership is completely disengaged (as someone else already pointed out). Opportunity to join a semi-mandatory company retreat twice a year Allows you a great opportunity to juggle hobbies/family obligations/side hustle, easily (and this is why I've stayed) Some benefits (401K match, personal development funds, healthcare) are good.

Cons

Owners are all talk, no action (and completely absent lately because they are feeling unappreciated) Management is inexperienced and ineffective Pay is grossly under current market average Company culture (a perfect example of "do as we say but not as we do") Co-workers are cult-like family members (better be ready to hear a lot of "remember when" stories from the hey-day) Vacation policy is a joke. You have to take PTO on a holiday! Only people that want to retire soon are still working here (myself included)

We welcome the feedback from this anonymous employee and appreciate them sharing their story and perspective, even if part of it is hard to hear. Unfortunately, not everyone exhibits Integrity, Humility, the Passion to Grow, and Emotional Intelligence to the extent needed to be on the team at Rockton. I am thankful this person appreciated their autonomy, as indeed as leaders we do not micro-manage. It's sad to be viewed as disengaged, but I respect their viewpoint. I don't plan to change my involvement or engagement with my company, because owners get to make the choice of involvement when they risk their own livelihoods to build, fund, and support a highly functional team. I know for me that *not* micro-managing team members is a sign of respect I'd want from my employer. I'm thankful they appreciated our all-expenses-paid-including-life-partners retreats to Cancun, Walt Disney World, and other premier destinations for learning and fun. And yes, we do support all our team members with their families coming first. We make allowances for the unforeseen circumstances that pull us away from our careers and into caring for a family member. That's what family does. And yes, we are guilty of treating our team like family. These are people we work with and play with, because they matter. It's great to be recognized for our 401k contributions, the generous top-tier health insurance, 25 days of PTO (yes, Christmas plus 24 other days), and Personal Development Funds, which allow our team members funding to pursue personal interests that have nothing to do with their careers. We pay competitive wages and review market salaries often. Yes, salaries alone are sometimes at the lower end of the typical spectrum. When you include all the perks we offer, our salaries are above market averages. More importantly, we don’t want to attract job-hoppers who are after maximizing a paycheck before they move on. We invest in our team and work hard to retain them. Most stay because they love our culture and values and realize their compensation is not only fair, but they also benefit from profit sharing. Growing a company from nothing to a multi-million-dollar ERP channel leader has been both rewarding and humbling. I accept and embrace my own inexperience and imperfection and strive to do better by practicing the Passion to Grow. There are more capable leaders than I. And I appreciate that most of my team sees my intention to do better as a leader, and they continue to follow, despite my flaws. I regret my leadership shortfalls let this person down. We succeed only because each person on our team is successful. I am passionate and proud of the work our team does. Our culture is based on Integrity, Humility, Emotional Intelligence, and the Passion to Grow. It’s not a fit for everyone, and we know and respect that.
