Pros
Starting pay is above industry average. High amount of PTO days. When in the office, free lunch. No dress code. A very liberal work culture (politically and with typical workplace norms). High amount of growth in the company means that there is a high availability for promotions. The company has a strong initiative towards diversity, so much so that two Root managers said on a public Spotify podcast that they value diversity over qualifications when interviewing internal and external candidates. Root also mandates that at least one minority candidate be interviewed for every manager role. Free goodies like blankets or bookbags periodically sent in the mail.
Cons
Company is so focused on growth of its policy numbers that some departments, especially in claims, are way overworked. Workplace is extremely cliquey with merit only being a secondary or sometimes tertiary metric. Culture can be very "fit in or fit out" particularly when it comes to against the grain thinking or a belief that the emperor has no clothes. Top end salaries in claims have been lowered despite entry salaries remaining high leading to low, if any, salary increases when employees are promoted. Poor work culture of hubris that starts at the top . It's largely internally believed that Root will absolutely crush the market because of our app and this has led to a high amount of arrogance and zealotry throughout the company. Belief that we're a technology company has put little to none to sometimes adverse value in employees being experienced or knowledgeable in the insurance industry and has put important decision makers in place that know nothing about insurance. This has seriously damaged Root in the past and present and will likely continue to do so in the future despite the 2020 push to hire people with industry experience to top positions.
