Low Pay for Part-Time Staff - Arts Administrator Rutgers University Employee Review

Pros

Working in the arts on interesting and engaging projects.

Cons

Many staff jobs require advanced degrees, such as a masters. But they only offer part-time positions with no benefits. I have had difficulty in the lengthy hiring process. It was difficult seeking help when I hadn't been paid months after being hired. The university may be a good place to work for full-time administrative staff and faculty, but most of the interactions with students and actual work and teaching is done by part-time lecturers and staff who work multiple part-time jobs at handfuls of institutions... many times making less than 30k a year. This is a problem with trends in higher education in general, but specifically at Rutgers more so than many other institutions I have experience with.

Pros

co-workers are super nice, friendly and collaborative. Good flexibility in work arrangements. My immediate boss is nice.

Cons

Morale is quite low, and turnover is high. We are losing good people and goals are not being met. Senior Leader tell us to do more with less, and do not want constructive feedback. They don't lead by example, taking elaborate trips instead of being present and supporting staff. Rules don't apply to them. So disappointing, not what you would expect from a public university.
