Pros
The people in the workforce are generally exceptional characters for the most part. Lots of humour to keep the lights on with the morale. Lacking direction but a strong willingness to build a team with what little resources they have.
Cons
Like most train driving jobs, the money is close to what you would expect per fortnight. Although, you trade double the mental energy to make that, than you would most other places. I go into any job with the mindset of being a good employee, staying away from obstructionist behaviour and generally going that extra mile where I can for the common goal. This is a place that regardless of your enthusiasm at the start, by the end you end up like the rest of the disenchanted folk that work here. In just about all departments, there is a low morale that runs through the place. The "Family" are frugal with money where it counts, (locomotives, vehicles, spare parts, training, resources, staffing), but liberal with funding on things that aren't necessary to the business. Its no exaggeration that every racing team that SCT are involved with have better fueling facilities, higher quality equipment, career development and conditions than the yard behind the head office that pays for it. It is an incredibly challenging place to work. No decent communication between departments, minimal positive management engagement with their employees and a strong whiff of cronyism comes from most managerial positions. Many people have tried and failed to raise issues with management, but eventually give up.
