Bain of our existence - Assistant Director SMU (Southern Methodist University) Employee Review

Pros

Staff and faculty are very passionate about working for SMU, and it shows in how they work with students and each other. Great benefits (tuition, retirement plan, etc.) Fantastic network of alumni Students are (generally) a pleasure to work with and inspire me to work harder to help them achieve their goals

Cons

Extremely low morale since the start of the Bain campaign -- many good people are leaving as a result, and turnover in many departments is much higher than it should be for higher ed (and nothing is being done to combat this, feels like leadership doesn't care that we're constantly losing talented and experienced professionals) Staff salaries are not competitive, and the budget changes are not going to help in the near future Terrible mentality about work/life balance - senior management will work you to exhaustion if you allow them to, and it is the norm for most student service positions on campus

Pros

Like the work I do and the people I work with. Activity fluctuates along the typical school calendar with the summer being slower.

Cons

You are expected to jump into change without asking questions. Even when a reason/justification on why or how you are doing something is met with a tone of "I don't care, Do what I said". Direct supervisor and colleagues are great and have your back. Many staff positions don't have a way to move up the career ladder.
