Pros
Sandbox ABA is possibly the place you imagine when you think fondly of childhood. It’s a home and a family. It’s creativity and exploration. It’s where you learn and grow and feel safe. Hello! My name is Jessi Turnbow-Cao. I was introduced to ABA therapy 15 years ago at a time when I knew I wanted to do something that mattered in the world but didn’t know what it would be. Rebecca Ryan, our founder asked if I would consider training to be a behavioral therapist and started me on a journey I would have never imagined. The team at Sandbox feels like family. We share our ideas and step up when hands or heads are needed. We talk about work A LOT, but we also know about each other’s lives. We come together in big groups when we want to be together, and we split off into our separate areas when we need some space. It’s very human. Our centers have great light (so many windows!) and tons of space. They feel good to walk into every morning. We are in a beautiful, quiet neighborhood with a great park and lots of places to explore. Sandbox is packed with creative people. Our kiddos have interesting passions that range all over the place, and somehow there is always a therapist to match. We make SO MUCH ART, and we don’t have rules about how to do it. It’s remarkable to witness the ways each child interprets a project, often surprising. We listen to music and dance. We catch bugs and make worlds for them. We read stories and try out the concepts through projects and games. When a kiddo wants to know about something, we find a way to make it happen. And the ABA therapy is woven in so that kids are constantly learning the way they do it best, by playing. We love our kids so much, on the best days and the worst days. It’s hard to explain to someone who hasn’t experienced it, but these are some of the most gifted, interesting people you could hope to know. And we get to hang out with them all day and show them the world! We teach them how to make friends, how to communicate, to accept difficult things and find ways to move through them. We are right next to them when they need us, and we step back and give them space when they don’t. The whole point is to give them the skills to be independent, and when it takes shape it is absolutely everything. Rainbows and sunshine aside, it is challenging (sometimes exhausting) work. We are a small privately owned business, so we wear all the hats. We create learning materials, write lesson plans, run errands, and cover for each other when someone has to be out. Our staff is trained daily in the natural environment through observation sessions with our BCBAs. We are asked to demonstrate, listen, and adapt in the moment because we ask the same of our kids. We are physical; we are indoors and out, upstairs and down, duck-duck-goose and piggyback rides. We support some big feelings and some wild hairs. But it is FUN. You might like it here! I’ve had many jobs. I’ve even left for another job and come back. For me, there has been no other place like Sandbox. If any of the above intrigues you, come see. We’d love to show you and share it with you.
Cons
You must be creative and quick witted to thrive here.
Pros
- coworkers are great! - supportive BCBA’s - owner is a great teacher
Cons
- low pay - clinics are constantly messy - upper management does have favoritism and it shows. - only have 2 BCBA’s so you’re yearly review (where you get your raise) is always delayed/ forgotten about - no really separated break area for the employees at one of the clinics. - no clear and consistent management
