Pros

Lots of Customized products thus makes the projects interesting. Clients are mostly academics, very easy to communicate. Also met some amazing and knowledgeable co-workers.

Cons

Challenge #1: extremely low pay for the level of work you are expected to do and the depth of knowledge you are expected to be equipped with. How low? Use your imagination. Challenge#2: HR manager is the spouse of the company owner. Textbook conflicts of interest here. Therefore, if you wanted to talk about an issue you had with your boss to your HR, it’s quite difficult as HR may or may not be biased. And don’t blame yourself if you ever wondered whether the matter of confidentiality would be guaranteed or not. Challenge #3: No contribution programs to employees’ retirement. Challenge #4: products are not competitive

Pros

Flexible hours, very lax atmosphere,

Cons

Extremely under-appreciative, was even suggested that I take a course to become a millwright to help repair things around the shop and when I inquired about a higher pay rate for getting a new degree I was outright denied anything above $18/h which is already much below what my current trade already earns in almost any other self respecting business. In connection with the pay they have trouble keeping licensed guys in the building, so if you’re starting out in the trade, forget completing your apprenticeship there, they can’t help you. Almost constant confusion with either unimportant issues or untrained, unknowledgeable persons, design specifically will consistently give things that they know to be wrong but neglect to fix them which just adds time and frustration to everyone’s day. Lack of decent equipment, jobs come up in this place too often where we either don’t have proper equipment to do it right or efficiently and it’s really left to you to decide how to make this part. Or rather attempt to make it work. Safety, (wish I didn’t have to include, but health and safety is practically nonexistent) when concerns are brought forward they are often downplayed or ignored altogether. Being in the machining department this is quite frankly scary. Taking care of all of your own safety concerns helps you learn to be safe personally but when they allow untrained people to work in the shop and don’t tell them about all the dangers of what they’re doing it’s hard to feel comfy in the place I typically enjoy and thrive in.
