Pros

Working from home gave me some reprieve from the trauma of working in-person in healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic. I was able to continue working in healthcare and worked for a phenomenal MD. Though becoming a medical doctor, mid-level practitioner, or even a registered nurse is nowhere in my career path, the physician I worked for taught me so, so much. The ever-revolving door of chief scribes I worked under recognized and respected my knowledge and prior experience work in healthcare and were always relatively hands-off, allowing me to work independently. You are also provided adequate equipment (laptop, second monitor, wired mouse & keyboard, headset) once you pass ScribeU training. Asynchronous work allowed for a more laidback work day, and scheduling was actually truly flexible (I worked M-F 8-5, but almost everyone else worked around their school schedules).

Cons

The pay is absolutely abhorrent and you will never get an increase, whether based on COL, merit, performance, or length of service. Forget about any benefits, too. The training is okay if you have healthcare/medical experience. Unfortunately most of the new hires have little to no experience and are basically thrown into this wild world of medical language, abbreviations, and documentation. After the 4 days (8 hours) of classroom training and 1 day (4 hours) of pre-clinical training, you are given 5 days (8 hours each shift, thankfully!) of clinical (floor) training then you are off on your own.

Thank you for leaving us this review. This is why being a medical scribe is such a great experience as you really do get to see firsthand how medicine functions, which is something you really can’t get from other jobs or volunteer work. While having some prior medical experience can be very helpful, at ScribeAmerica we are very proud to offer such in-depth classroom training with ScribeU and floor training program to help prepare all our employees to work as a scribe. We do our best to train our scribes to become solo, and try to train for every scenario. We are also very happy to hear you enjoyed the flexibility that being a medical scribe can offer, as well as being able to work remotely as a Telescribe. We work very hard to maintain our place as the industry leader and strive to always be competitive in every market. I hope you were also able to take advantage of some of ScribeAmerica’s other amazing benefits including employee discounts on things like computers, Kaplan prep courses, and even on Lyft.
