Pros

The staff treat you as one of your own on day one with the organization. You'll never feel like you're disconnected, and the team is truly dedicated to its mission. They listen and channel the feedback from activists into direct action. It's a great workplace, and I'd recommend it to anyone considering Secular Coalition for America.

Cons

If you are not used to everyday being different from the last, I could see that being a con. Otherwise, it's a great place to work.

Pros

They used to really be great. Now they are only focused on fundraising and not programmatic initiatives or the mission.

Cons

Complete staff turnover over last 12 months. Unorganized leadership that doesn't retain information and ignores advice from team.

Secular Coalition For America Response

The mission of the Secular Coalition for American is to increase the visibility of and respect for nontheistic viewpoints in the United States, and to protect and strengthen the secular character of our government as the best guarantee of freedom for all. Our primary program focus is lobbying at the federal level—working to advance legislation that supports and furthers our mission. We also host "Secular Lobby Day", an annual day of lobbying for the constituents of the SCA along with the leadership and constituents of our 19 coalition member organizations. We work throughout the year to educate our fellow Americans and our grassroots activists about the importance of the wall of separation between religion and government. I recently celebrated my second anniversary with the Secular Coalition (April of 2020), so I can attest to changes in staff, but reject the claim of a "complete staff turnover" over the past 12 months. I agree, we have made significant changes during the past year, and I think it is fair to suggest that some of our turnover was due to the changing desires and goals of individual staff members, as well as the organization's need to professionalize our operations. Losing valued employees is always disappointing, but offers an opportunity to find someone equally capable of making a significant contribution to our organization. It is difficult to respond to concerns about personnel matters. They are purposefully kept private, and consequently are often misunderstood or mischaracterized by those looking from the outside-in. All of our efforts—education, advocacy, lobbying— depend upon contributions from individual donors. There can be no progress toward achieving our mission without fundraising, and there certainly would be no employees if we did not continue fundraising. One of the primary obligations of the ED is to ensure our employees are financially secure in their positions so they can focus on the work at hand.
