Good people, outside of most senior management - Regional Account Manager Semler Scientific Employee Review

Pros

Most of the employees are genuinely good people, very enthusiastic and empathetic. The products are legitimate and are serving to drive investment in value-based healthcare, which is the future of medicine in the US. Since it still runs like a start-up, employees have the opportunity to try out a lot of roles and wear many hats within the medical device industry. Work-life balance is pretty good most of the time and we are rarely asked to put in more than 50 hours per week.

Cons

You will notice that there are very few middle managers and that is for a reason: senior management prefers to burn and churn the rank and file rather than investing in their professional development. The high turnover rate reveals how the C-suite particularly views employees as people to be exploited rather than a resource to be valued. Pay is significantly lower than market rate, especially for medical device sales. For the last 2 years the whole company has been suspended in the awkward transition from start-up culture to corporation, which has resulted in a constant scramble for resources and tension between departments. Senior management is so invested in their "babies" (the clients that they brought on years ago) that they have a hard time letting go of "the reigns" and trusting their teams, so they micro-manage in ways that are counterproductive and even leads to embarrassment in front of customers. There is an obsession with the org chart for some reason, and the managers are constant fighting to prove who is the most influential with the C-suite, which keeps everyone underneath them in silos and ruins opportunities for collaboration and causes lower level employees to pick who they're loyal to. The C-suite is not accessible to anyone underneath the VP level and there is no transparency about decisions relating to business systems and sales policies that make employees' lives more difficult. Worst of all, management shows no interest in feedback from the team and I have been called a "nuisance" to my face for bringing any of these problems to their attention.

Pros

I really enjoyed working at Semler with the IT Team. We worked collaboratively and had autonomy to work on projects that helped meet company goals.

Cons

Being a small company sometimes the amount or work that needed to be done with a small team made things challenging. Sometimes we struggled getting all the items done on the project board while doing our primary jobs.

Pros

Fantastic managers, directors, and coworkers. Fully paid insurance premiums. Fully remote.

Cons

Company has zero direction. Lost most customers when Medicare policies were changed. Being purchased for its bitcoin holdings but claiming it is a "merger". Three rounds of layoffs in three years.
