Pros

Good opportunity to gain quick, high-visibility marketing experience, build your portfolio, upskill on a well-known tool, and become more competitive for marketing roles I worked on some really cool projects and learned a lot from the hands-on experience. On an individual level, I collaborated with some talented and passionate people who care deeply about their peers and their work. As a result, I made many good connections who continue to support me, although many of them have since left the company. It’s also a good place to learn about cross-cultural communication, particularly the unspoken assumptions and misunderstandings that can arise from hearing things differently. (Yes, I’d consider this one a pro in the long run, although it was difficult to deal with at times.)

Cons

The marketing department's culture is wildly inconsistent. As mentioned above, some people are creative, professional, and a joy to work with on an individual level. But leadership appears to be plagued with cliquishness and internal politics. In my personal experience, if you–or your boss–do not curry favor with certain people, you will likely have negative experiences until you are pushed out. Additionally, they seem to value results more than the individuals or teams that helped to create them, which can lead to burnout. I would also describe some of what I witnessed and/or heard about as bullying. But nothing ever seemed to be done about it, possibly because of the relative social power of the individuals involved. Marketing also describes itself as having a “feedback culture,” when my lived reality suggests otherwise. Leaders claim to be open to feedback, when in reality, they only appear capable of delivering harsh, unconstructive criticism while closing themselves off to receiving it. I’m not comfortable sharing any specific details. And my experience would suggest that none of it will be taken seriously. Nevertheless, I hope that the organization takes steps in the right direction to foster a healthier and more accountable environment.

Pros

The product is an industry leader, making it exciting to work on. The teams are filled with incredibly smart, creative, and collaborative people. Benefits and remote flexibility are solid, and there are good opportunities to learn SEO and digital marketing deeply.

Cons

The work culture can occasionally lean toward working harder than playing hard especially as the company scales.
