Pros

It is a small firm in the financial district, which is great if you want a city feel. Super quiet so you can feel productive. Jim Dobberstein is a very nice and approachable person.

Cons

Chinese is spoken more then english is. The managers are in cliques with their own races. It is super boring and their clients will not diversify experiences. NO community, very poor training. When recruiting they claim low turnover and a great work life balance. It is a complete lie and even the recruiters know it!

I want to thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback, and would like to address a few of your specific concerns here. It’s unfortunate to hear that your experience didn’t live up to the work environment we strive for. Much like the city of San Francisco, Shea Labagh Dobberstein is a Firm made up of a multitude of different cultures. We are proud of our diversity, and committed to creating a collaborative environment that values a positive work-life balance for all of our employees. We create opportunities for our staff to socialize as much as possible to encourage this. In 2015, this included after-work mixers at local venues, an outing to see the Giants play the Dodgers, and firm-sponsored volunteer activities. It is unusual to hear your comment about foreign languages. Our staff come from a wide range of cultures and countries, so we do request that everyone communicate in English. While many are multi-lingual, the vast majority of our employees do not know how to speak Chinese. If you would like to elaborate on this comment, please feel welcome to contact me personally and share your concerns. Our turnover ratio is low compared to the industry. Just last year, three of our staff celebrated their 30-year anniversaries with Shea Labagh Dobberstein, and we’re fortunate to have many other employees who have been here for most of their careers. We like to think that is in part due to the large spectrum of clients we have and the size of our firm, which means employees can make a greater difference to their clients’ businesses. In light of your comments, we will think of new ways we can create a better sense of community for our staff, so thank you again for your input.

Pros

*People are nice and welcoming *Opportunities for all departments to get together such as parties and community events. *Good work/life balance

Cons

*No training when it comes to tasks being assigned or policies and procedures, because the excuse is that people who should be training you are too busy with their own tasks and have no time to train. It is more of you being thrown into the fire, figure out on your own what you need to do, and ask questions if you get stuck (and that also depends on if the person you are asking the question to understands the question or knows the answer to your question...if not, you pretty much need to answer your own question yourself by doing research which takes up a lot of time). If you are a person that needs to 100% rely on someone to guide you through a task, this firm is not for you. *Systems are still in the prehistoric era (but gradually and slowly improving). *Lack of communication within people of higher positions (manager and above), which leads to unclear expectations and unknown deadlines.

Thank you very much for your feedback as we value what our employees have to say. Over the past year, the firm has been holding an increased number of trainings across all departments, and we plan to continue this in 2018. Employees are welcome to attend any educational offerings that will support them professionally, including paid CPE training, seminars (including exclusive opportunities through our partner DFK), conferences, webinars and more. We are proud of our “open door” policy, where employees are encouraged to ask questions, and approach management with any questions or feedback. In addition to moving to the Cloud and other electronic processes last year, we now use Jostle, SLD’s Intranet, to make firm-wide announcements about events, important news, and, most importantly, to facilitate communication between all employees. A number of new initiatives are currently underway, including a 360-degree review process to provide a holistic view within the firm. Efforts such as these, and feedback from you and others, will help ensure we remain one of the top firms to work for in the Bay Area.
