Pros

The staff are the best thing about the firm, they band together to help each other out. For client work, it's a hit or miss on how good it is, which in turn makes a difference on how much training and overall experience you get. No matter what you get, you learn a lot. They make an effort to provide healthy snacks and drinks (no soda). The company events and occasional treats are nice. Thanksgiving week off. Flexible time! Great location for commuters, with nice surrounding amenities. Desk are standing desk option with great views. If you want a significant time off, like 4-6 weeks they will accommodate but it's without pay since PTO is only 3 weeks.

Cons

The hours are brutal during busy season, as you would expect from any CPA firm. Some of the managers are awesome and you'll really learn from them, while others are unapproachable and don't care. I unfortunately had to work with a few bad ones, which soured things and whom make you feel like a cog in the wheel. If your great, they will utilize you in a way that keeps you swamped all year long, making it difficult to have a work life balance, unless you are firm with your boundaries and pace yourself. They are strict about billable hours, like a law office. Unfortunately, no bonus for hourly staff, and salaried staff bonus (often) equals out to the overtime they worked. Health insurance has high deductible and employee pays portion dependent coverage is expensive. 401k match is low. The desk are small and it can get really noisy. Software is glitchy.

Thank you for taking time to leave a review. Your feedback is helpful so we can build on our strengths and make any necessary improvements. I agree that our people are what make SLD a special place to work, and it’s important that our employees feel heard, valued, and recognized for their hard work. I’m happy to hear that you enjoyed our company events as well as working in our new centrally-located downtown SF office. We’re also excited to offer a flexible work schedule, as well as designated PTO off in addition to regular PTO, to help support our employees in maintaining a healthy work-life balance. When it comes to other benefits, we are constantly evaluating against comparable firms and to-date have determined that our overall compensation plus time off plus benefit package (including 401k match and multiple healthcare plans to choose from) is competitive. That said, we are continually weighing which benefits are considered to be most valuable to our employees so your input is meaningful. We receive a lot of positive feedback about the "family" vibe at SLD and take great pride in our open door policy. I will take your feedback and continue to work with our management team to drive more consistency and to ensure the experience you had does not become a pattern. I’m happy to hear you learned a lot during your time with SLD, and wish you the best in your future roles.

Pros

*People are nice and welcoming *Opportunities for all departments to get together such as parties and community events. *Good work/life balance

Cons

*No training when it comes to tasks being assigned or policies and procedures, because the excuse is that people who should be training you are too busy with their own tasks and have no time to train. It is more of you being thrown into the fire, figure out on your own what you need to do, and ask questions if you get stuck (and that also depends on if the person you are asking the question to understands the question or knows the answer to your question...if not, you pretty much need to answer your own question yourself by doing research which takes up a lot of time). If you are a person that needs to 100% rely on someone to guide you through a task, this firm is not for you. *Systems are still in the prehistoric era (but gradually and slowly improving). *Lack of communication within people of higher positions (manager and above), which leads to unclear expectations and unknown deadlines.

Thank you very much for your feedback as we value what our employees have to say. Over the past year, the firm has been holding an increased number of trainings across all departments, and we plan to continue this in 2018. Employees are welcome to attend any educational offerings that will support them professionally, including paid CPE training, seminars (including exclusive opportunities through our partner DFK), conferences, webinars and more. We are proud of our “open door” policy, where employees are encouraged to ask questions, and approach management with any questions or feedback. In addition to moving to the Cloud and other electronic processes last year, we now use Jostle, SLD’s Intranet, to make firm-wide announcements about events, important news, and, most importantly, to facilitate communication between all employees. A number of new initiatives are currently underway, including a 360-degree review process to provide a holistic view within the firm. Efforts such as these, and feedback from you and others, will help ensure we remain one of the top firms to work for in the Bay Area.
