Pros
Great company to use as a stepping stone. You get great managerial, operational & logistics experience. The ESPP is excellent. A few store managers have retired from their 30+ year careers as millionaires.
Cons
There’s not any real opportunity for advancement beyond City Manager. It’s actually a rarity to advance past a sales rep or store manager unless you move to another part of the country and, even then, it’s commonly limited to City Manager. All the bigwigs in the company are old white men so I’m curious to see what happens in ~10 years. They run the entire country’s marketing strategy as if they’re as well known as they are in Texas when, in fact, they could be doing a lot better in California. Kelly-Moore and Benjamin Moore are serious competitors that they don’t take seriously. They force stores and reps to compete against one another. They change reps’ budget goals at the end of the year when they’re doing exceptionally well so that they don’t have to pay as much bonus money. Store managers and assistants are hourly so their benefits are cheaper. The manager compensation is presented annually but it’s based on a 55 hour work week.
