Pros

Health/Dental Benefits Employee Discount (however the pay is so miniscule that you can't afford to buy anything anyway) "Managers" pretty much leave you alone unless DM or VP is visiting NO consistency in following "policies" so you can always feign ignorance and never get in trouble

Cons

Horrible pay especially in this economic climate...they will try to sell you on your commission but no one is making level 5 quota so you will not make much in that arena NO pay increases (unless you are tight with DM) then you only get a "pay raise" by getting promoted which means even more horrible hours esp during xmas, v-day, and mother's day UNREASONABLE quotas (don't these people realize we are in a global recession) They closed stores, laid hundreds off at h.o., and demoted many more, yet retail locations are expected to exceed last year's sales. They have flooded the cases with cheaply made merchandise that is horrible to sell and then deal with customer complaints about the fact that it constantly is at the shop Speaking of shop, because of the lay offs that I mentioned earlier, they are overloaded and underpaid as well, so there are constant issues with workmanship and turn around times Absolutely no consistency in policies and no real feedback from management If you work in Louisiana, you will probably never see the DM and if you do see her she will be on her phone the whole time As stated above, the lack of management skills are not the store manager's fault, the company promotes based on sales and we all know that sales skills do not equate to management skills.

Pros

Great place to learn how to become a better jeweler and grow your skills, if you are in an environment that takes full advantage of what the company provides. The benefits are also extremely generous with PTO and depending on the work environment, your schedule can be very flexible. Also being a jeweler means you are in a separate department from the sales side of the company and they have no authority over you, and your job as a jeweler isn't impacted by the sales side, you could be working inside a Jared, but it doesn't matter if the salesperson couldn't make the sale, and the money charged between the Service Center and the store is all just a number for tracking margin, so it's really nice being a jeweler that doesn't need to worry about sales or have a salesperson lord over you. It's very different than a mom and pop jeweler job.

Cons

Depending on the shop/manager your growth can be stagnanted. The company pushes for number of units and that's created a mentality of a focus for lesser quality workmanship to pass through QC. The store side salespeople don't get trained well on their side and will lean on the service center side to do the technical things for them. The sales staff knowledge on jewelry can be next to nothing because it's not a requirement for them, so that adds a lot of friction between jeweler and sales staff.
