Pros
Flexibility: You can choose which days you want off with 1 weeks notice, though if something comes up last minute they are happy to help you.
Cons
No work life balance: You arrive at the depot for 10am and are often not home until 8pm or later. Constant concentration required: You are behind the wheel of a van the entire day. Driving, following your route on your phone, processing stops on your phone. This becomes tiring mentally, and by the time you are finished for the day, you feel exhausted. This only gets worse over time. Burn out expected. No time for breaks: Every minute counts. I would bring sandwiches and a snack for lunch and would give myself about 90 seconds to eat before getting back to work. The more time you spend not delivering, the later you finish your route. The routes have you working right up until the end of the day. Company vans: They are all in terrible condition. Turning the ignition on you’ll be met with a dashboard that lights up like a Christmas tree full of errors. Cruise control and aircon not working is to be expected. There’s loads of cosmetic damage to the vans as well. They are always looking to accuse/sack drivers over damage to the vans. Self employed: No sick pay, pension or security. You have to pay £15 a week to have your invoices done, and £8 a day taken from your wages for renting the van. Amazon as a whole: Extremely inefficient, your bags are supposed to be sorted in stop-order, they are not. You load the van as per the training you were given so that they should be in order, but you will find that they are just randomly thrown on the trolley, meaning you have to then re-sort it when you can. Parcels are often wrongly categorised, letters will be classed as poly bags, book folders as parcels and vice versa. Annoying over time as this means you’re looking in a pile for something which was never there. Often whoever puts the stickers on the parcels will (I’m convinced deliberately) place them over the customers name and address. This wastes time as you’re having to scan QR codes to find the right one.
