Declining Culture, Excessive Micromanagement and Uncertain Financial Stability - Software Engineer SkillLab Employee Review

Pros

Competent engineering managers and friendly colleagues.

Cons

The business model appeared increasingly dependent on a single government client in the Middle East. Over time, what seemed to be a scalable product evolved into a highly customized solution tailored to that client, raising concerns about long-term sustainability and diversification of revenue streams. Several experienced project managers left the organization, and subsequent leadership changes significantly impacted the culture. Teams experienced increased micromanagement, excessive oversight of day-to-day work, and growing ambiguity around role ownership and responsibilities. This made it difficult for teams to operate efficiently and reduced autonomy for engineers. A particularly challenging aspect was the disconnect between employee concerns and leadership responses. Issues related to toxic project management practices and team dynamics were frequently raised but often appeared to go unaddressed, leading to frustration and declining morale. The company also went through substantial workforce reductions, resulting in the departure of a large portion of the organization. Throughout this period, employees were repeatedly reassured about stability which made the eventual layoffs especially difficult for those affected. The gap between internal messaging and the outcome significantly impacted trust in leadership. It is really sad to see once a company that seemed so promising falling downhill like this.

Pros

Flexible hours, lovely colleagues, fun culture

Cons

Instable cash flows, late salaries. Not that great benefits and no pension. Poor and dishonest management. Massive layoffs that were prone to happen however the company promised that it would not happen.

Pros

I had a really positive internship at Skilllab. The company has a great vibe and everyone on the team works well together. If I ever needed help, people were always ready to jump in. I learned a lot and grew a lot during my time here. My manager was an amazing mentor who gave me helpful feedback. They even gave me tools to help me with things like managing my tasks and brainstorming ideas. I loved the company's diverse culture; it was welcoming and made me feel comfortable from the start.

Cons

It can sometimes be hard for new people to get to know their colleagues on a personal level. I think it would be great if the company could encourage more casual after-work hangouts, maybe even a simple happy hour in the office. This would make it much easier for everyone to connect and build stronger friendships. However, I want to say that the company does a great job of organizing bigger events like retreats and celebrating big milestones. My suggestion is just for more informal opportunities to connect in between those large events.
