Fantastic work culture that combines the perks of start-up cultures without the drawbacks. As of right now, work is fully remote. Even more junior employees, like I was, are treated with respect and as adults who can manage our own schedules and workloads. There aren’t set office hours where you have to be online - despite many in leadership living on the East Coast, I live in Central Time Zone and typically worked central time zone hours without an issue. No one his monitoring your Slack status constantly to see that you’re online; there’s a culture that it’s fine to be offline to do heads-down work or go to a doctor appointment. Vacation time is unlimited and you’re encouraged to take it. It’s not a bureaucratic process at all - just let people know when you’ll be offline and you’re good to go. People are collegial and are focused on doing the right thing, which is unsurprising given the nature of the business - trying to make fairer models. They invest a lot in developing your knowledge and skills. Lastly, the work is engaging and interesting. For me as a consultant, my day-to-day worked involved data science and machine learning, software development, business analytics, communicating with customers, training users, writing articles, policy analysis, and more. All of this is high impact and in the service of making less discriminatory models, so you feel good about the work you’re doing. They also encourage you to lean into the work you enjoy - for example, my coworker with the same title as me spent relatively more of his time developing software contributions because that was a good fit for his skills, background, and interests, while I spent relatively more time writing articles about AI policy.

It’s a small company and some of the things associated with that could be pros or cons depending on personal preference. For example, job responsibilities can be diverse - this was a pro for me because I have a lot of varied interests, but may not be for others.
