Pros

The projects themselves are high-end and interesting. If you’re looking for exposure to luxury residential design, that part is real.

Cons

The work environment is deeply toxic and entirely top-down. Input from staff is generally not welcomed; decisions come from ownership and you are expected to execute without question. The role was not what was represented during hiring, with responsibilities constantly shifting based on whatever ownership needed in the moment. Boundaries around time and communication are not respected, so expect last-minute requests at all hours and unclear expectations. There is no mentorship, no structure, and little to no professional respect for employees. Turnover is high and for good reason, coworkers are consistently unhappy and it shows. The off-boarding process was handled without basic professionalism or dignity.

Spectrum Interior Design Response

We understand that not every role or work environment is the right fit for every individual. Spectrum Interior Design is a highly collaborative, fast paced luxury residential firm that holds a high standard for professionalism, communication, accountability, adaptability, and active team engagement. During this brief employment period, multiple efforts were made to connect regarding workflow, expectations, timelines, deliverables, and work progress, including requests for direct conversation that were declined. Ultimately, it became clear the role was not the right mutual fit. We are honored to serve the clientele we do and remain committed to building a positive, growth minded team of talented professionals who bring the experience they promise, communicate proactively, honor commitments, and take pride in delivering an elevated level of care and excellence. We are appreciative of the exceptional team members and collaborators who contribute to that culture every day and wish this individual the very best moving forward.

Pros

I really enjoyed the large-scale projects, clients and team. I grew very quickly being exposed to so much diversity in design styles and scope of work. It was nice to grow my knowledge in both construction and furniture, and I loved working with the team on complete home-furnishing installations.

Cons

Designing homes from start to finish requires a lot of knowledge and experience, plus you need to be able to keep track of a lot of moving parts. The caliber of the projects calls for high expectations both within and outside the firm.

Pros

Friendly office staff, centrally located office location, high-end projects.

Cons

I am posting this as a former employee to warn others considering a role here. Please read this carefully and do thorough due diligence before accepting any offer. This is a chaotic, low-trust, extremely micromanaged, high-stress environment with zero work-life balance (what the company will call “fast-paced”). Expect constant disruptions, endless unscheduled meetings, never-ending chat messages, and frequent check-ins that make it nearly impossible to find time for focused work. Pay is quite low for Silicon Valley, though the owner considers it generous. The role is advertised as 8 AM–5 PM “with flexibility as needed,” but it’s a classic bait and switch. Expect 8 AM–6 PM or later most days, frequent last-minute cancellations of your personal after-work plans, and rare actual lunch breaks. Factor in an extra 1–2 hours daily when evaluating the compensation. On your first day, you will sit through multiple hours of extremely detailed and strict rules covering personal appearance, conduct, and day-to-day operations. The office has cameras and listening devices everywhere. This is the main reason employees are required to be onsite daily--for monitoring--even though much of the work could easily be done hybrid or remotely. The company is severely understaffed, so expect a heavy workload that includes many tasks far outside your job description. Of course, you’ll still be expected to handle your core responsibilities all while performing at the level of someone with years of experience at the company — starting from day one — with minimal training. The owner is a perfectionist who maintains near-impossible standards and keeps track of even minor issues. Any perceived failure to meet her exact expectations can lead to quick termination. Turnover is alarmingly high. Most people quit or are fired within months. No one smiles. Everyone is stressed and overworked. LinkedIn shows 4+ pages of former employees — shocking for a small firm that claims only 2-10 staff — with dozens of people cycling through the same roles repeatedly. Average tenure shows about 3-7 months, with hardly anyone lasting a full year. This toxic culture has persisted for nearly a decade with no signs of improvement. One former employee from 2017 even listed their main responsibility as “addressing high turnover and low morale.” Nothing has changed. The owner presents herself as a caring empath who needs “A Players,” but in reality she is ruthless, control-obsessed, and treats people as disposable. She tends to attract empathetic individuals willing to sacrifice their personal lives and work late for free in exchange for paltry wages. Strong Recommendation: *Search LinkedIn for Spectrum Interior Design, Inc. and former employees. Review past employee tenures and roles/responsibilities. Reach out to former employees directly for the real story. *Ask what to expect from a typical day, how many people have held the same role before you, the actual turnover rate (quits and fires) in the past 3, 6, 12 months, etc. *Listen to your gut when you have red flags. If you value your mental and emotional health, work-life balance, and self-worth, strongly consider walking away. This environment has damaged many before you. Former employees speak of mental and emotional distress and diminished feelings of self-worth. The 1-star reviews tell the truth — the glowing 5-star ones do not. Proceed with extreme caution and do your own due diligence. You have been warned.
