Pros

Some remote work options but they force locals in.

Cons

I think my review was taken down as prior reviewer mentioned. All the same day 5 star reviews remain though. That’s strange. This place is very toxic. There is no coaching or training. The partners and admin team are constantly pointing fingers and blaming others. They are bullies. They only care about you when they’re recruiting you or after you’ve put in your notice. In between you’re never doing enough or meeting expectations. The firm is way understaffed due to the high turnover. They will bring you in at a market wage but you will quickly fall behind with below market and below inflation raises. If you ask for more, you will be denied and told you’re not working enough hours. They’d rather pay new people and recruiters than take care of the existing staff. Most don’t last long. The ones who stay are burnt out due to above. Research this place and the partners. There is a lot going on here.

Thank you for the feedback. As a company experiencing perpetual growth, we acknowledge and proactively embrace our responsibility to consistently identify and respond to areas of improvement that ensure our team is provided a positive work environment, whether onsite or remote. This is accomplished through year-round internal and external training, and established mentoring programs. During the past year, management has taken steps to address players with demonstrated patterns of overt and inconspicuous disharmony related to behavior, work ethic, accountability, and collaborative efforts. These measures have helped to ensure we maintain an environment that considers the needs of all our people. We are confident these efforts have allowed us to secure dynamic new talent, while also successfully help retain our team of dedicated professionals. A testament to the quality of our culture is that one-third of our team is comprised of long-term employees with five or more years. All employees are provided annual merit increases, which are consistent with market compensation for a mid-tier CPA firm, based on metrics designed to fairly evaluate various aspects of performance. Our firm tracks billable and non-billable hours. Discrepancies between self-attested hours worked and measurable productivity, participation and professional growth are accounted for when determining increases. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, local employees were hired with the expectation to perform their job duties and responsibilities onsite. In response to the pandemic, though considered an essential business, local employees were, and continue to be, provided the option to work a hybrid schedule, unless their position requires a full-time, onsite presence. As the company grows and the workforce evolves, we intend to continually modify our policies to keep consistent with current employment trends and remote work options.

Pros

By far, this is the best firm I have worked for. There has always existed opportunities for professional and personal development if you are someone who is ready and willing to step up and be a contributing force. Management is considerate of work/life balances and are conscientious to acknowledge the hard work of their staff. Other attributes of the firm: integrity, professionalism, team atmosphere, convenient location, culturally diverse. I truly enjoy everyone I work with, the experience I have gained and the continued opportunities to advance within the firm.

Cons

Communication is always tricky in any firm. Management is very aware of the need for increased, streamlined communication between management and staff as well as between the various departments, and I have noticed a vast improvement in recent months.

Pros

They focus on a niche industry for audit and tax and it’s interesting to learn. One of the partners was helpful in learning about its nuances.

Cons

The admin managers only care about keeping the partners happy. The rest of the staff, including managers, are irrelevant to them. If they don’t like you, they will insult and belittle you to others behind your back. It was always fun to get a run down of what they said a couple days later from multiple coworkers. When addressing this issue with the partners I was told to deal with it myself and then the admin ignored my meeting request (a manager by the way) to address her behavior. Good times. The main partner is a bully and will actively seek to put you on the spot and make you feel unintelligent. If you call to ask a question on a complex issue, he’ll ask why you don’t already know the answer or get upset and tell you he doesn’t have time. He’ll call on your PTO enough to the point that you just have to ignore it and then he’ll leave a voicemail to put you on a guilt trip. After a year of service, I received a 3% raise. Whatever though. It was a tough year. COVID 19 issues and such. Even though the company received a generous amount of PPP loans that weren’t required to be paid back and later posted an article on LinkedIn letting everyone know how they could handle 6% inflation. Asking around, other coworkers received similar percentage increases. Working hours during busy season were brutal. A hallmark of the profession. However, the firm’s inability to retain employees due to its culture only made things more difficult.

Most are aware the COVID-19 pandemic forced many businesses to shut down or completely fold. Spiegel was fortunate to have been deemed an essential business, and management was determined to keep all team members employed during this incredibly challenging time. While it was difficult to direct an entire remote team, management kept its promise and not one employee was furloughed, laid off, or had their compensation decreased, despite some performance issues. And, at the end of 2020, all employees received a year-end bonus, unlike other industry firms. The PPP loans, which Spiegel applied for and received, helped our firm navigate through these extraordinary circumstances, as well as compensate our team members financially for their hard work and dedication. We understand that, due to the nature of the busy tax season, the work environment may become stressful during this time. The leadership team certainly appreciates the extra hours that each of our employees put in to completing the extra work required. Thank you, and we wish you the best in your future endeavors.
