Pros
- Work with the latest technology. - Free snacks in the office. - A semi-lenient work-from-home policy. - Opportunities to work on well known entities (and place them on your resume). - It is the type of environment that will add value to a Junior Dev so that they can get positions at one of the cooler startups or bigger companies.
Cons
- No career path within the organization. You're either hired on as a Junior Dev (where you will be under paid and over worked) or a Senior Dev (where you will be moderately paid and overworked). - A very abrasive environment amongst the dev teams. No positive reinforcements for good behavior, but plenty of negative reinforcement for the most minimal of mistakes. - Projects are unorganized and mis-managed which leads to long working hours for the dev team. - The business side implements the "Over-Promise, Under-Bid, Under Deliver" sales tactic, which lead to angry clients... which in-turn leads to long working hours and very unhappy clients. - It is a waterfall organization that is trying to be Agile, but they don't have a true scrum master to lead the charge. - If you are a Junior Dev with skills... you will get more responsibility, however you won't be adequately compensated. - Since the dev team has a "I'm always right" mentality, you will check in code that will subsequently break, due to the fact that someone didn't like the way it was written and changed it without your knowledge. - You are viewed as a resource, not as a person. - Certain members of the dev team will spend 6 of their 12 hours (in a work day), walking around and telling the team how great they are, while ragging on everyone else's code. These same team members, are also responsible for 60% of the defects.
