Pros

Fully remote / very flexible working.

Cons

Where to start.... I was at Stack for over 5 years. It was a dream job for the first year. Then came the Prosus buyout (plus maybe 100-200 layoffs just before that happened) and slowly every thing became terrible. They massively over hired, the economy turned and they made huge cuts - multiple times. I think I survived 6 rounds of various types of layoffs / "RIFs" / restructures in total. The company was around 800 headcount at it's peak in 2021/22 and now it's something like 250. God knows how many senior leadership changes there have been in that 5 years as well. Something like: - 2 CEO's (current one needs pushing out) - 3 CRO's - 4/5 CPO's - 1 CMO who left and was not replaced This means there seems to be no consistency with vision or execution. They have failed with so many product launches - courses, job postings via Indeed, collectives, OverflowAI.... And more. The core SaaS product is a very, very nice to have. The sell relies heavily on internal champions who often have fond memories of using the site. And those types of contacts are now becoming less frequent. The ads businesses are slowly churning revenue and the company puts absolutely zero effort into doing anything about it. The future looks bleak for Stack Overflow. Generative AI is taking a huge amount of the traffic that Stack used to get. Stack is also now selling its content to the AI firms. New content being added to Stack is now at a dribble, so eventually there'll be no need for the AI companies to continue paying for access. The amount of new content will not be worth paying for. Stack is becoming more and more irrelevant as time goes on. On top of that, Stack used to have a fantastic brand that was loved by developers. They abandoned their audience a few years ago to focus on selling their SaaS product instead and the users are resentful. New user sign ups are dropping as much of the content can now be provided by AI, and the younger generation have no nostalgia or affinity to the site. Prosus own the company and will want to make a profit on their investment. They bought it for $1.8bn and its current valuation is nowhere near that. I see one of two things happening. Either 1) They get rid of the CEO and replace someone with fresh energy and vision who can turn it around and keep SO relevant somehow. OR 2) Get rid of basically all the staff. Turn Stack into a skeleton crew who are there to maintain the site and sell data scraping access to LLM's only. Somehow I think Stack will end up in a fire sale and stripped for parts. Note that all the recent 5* reviews have been left by people in engineering who are very sheltered and protected. Every other department is leaving 1* or 2* reviews. If you work in anything other than software engineering, don't take a job here.

Company is going through a lot of changes. Solid business strategy and plan, but the environment can be intense. Turnover in Product leadership has not yet stabilized.
