Pros

You gain two brains, two sets of enthusiasm and creativity, and two employees committed to your success. Employees who are comfortable balancing life responsibilities experience less stress and more work satisfaction. This pays you back in increased motivation, positive customer service, and effective coworker relationships. You can move up in salary more quickly. If you’re looking to get frequent bumps to your paycheck, staying at one company may not achieve that goal, particularly as more businesses are reducing their cost-of-living increases and moving performance reviews further apart. Loyalty literally doesn’t pay.Even if you get a promotion at your current company, you’re less likely to secure a sizable increase than if you were to take a higher level job elsewhere. In fact, sometimes a promotion doesn’t even come with a raise, just increased responsibility. If they can’t reward you financially, ask for other perks like an extra week vacation or a more flexible work schedule. If they know you and trust your work, a company is more likely to oblige in these other areas. You can get a variety of experience. Working at several companies over the course of your career will enable you to learn a tremendous amount across diverse environments, which can broaden your knowledge and expertise. You have to prove yourself all over again when you start a new job. At first blush, this may feel like a “con” but think about it: If you’ve been at a job for a long time, there is a comfort level — maybe even a complacency — that can take over. A new job will push you out of your comfort zone which can often be the ideal way to expand your skill set and push you to a higher performance level.

Cons

You have an edge over external candidates. Most companies prefer to promote from within rather than go outside to fill positions. There are many benefits to identifying, grooming and keeping talent at a company and, according to a study done this year by Wharton management professor Matthew Bidwell, "external hires" get significantly lower performance evaluations for their first two years on the job than do internal workers who are promoted into similar jobs. The trick is to make your desire to move up known to your superiors so that when a more senior position becomes available, they think of you before looking elsewhere. People could question your staying power. You get to really understand your company and your contributions to it. When you spend a significant amount of time at one place, you learn a lot about its corporate culture and history — and become vested in its future success. When new staffers come in, they will look to you as a resource since you can share your deep knowledge with them, help them navigate the environment and learn the ropes. When your colleagues and boss know and trust you, they tend to leave you alone. When you’re new in a job, there’s always that test period when your superiors want to see if their instincts were right in hiring you. While you may have impressed them in interviews, they want to see that you can deliver once on board.
