Pros

A tremendous mission, a great company, and an unforgettable team of individuals. Being a huge fan of the startup ecosystem, interning at Stessa this past summer has been beyond rewarding. The supervisors are extremely helpful, understanding, approachable and professional; my fellow interns were some of the nicest and most genuine people I’ve worked with thus far. Under their guidance and expertise, I felt like a valued member that was making daily impact. Although Stessa is extremely new, the structure of the company was routinized efficiently. With daily standup meetings, weekly all-hands and Monday one-on-ones, everyone was always up-to-date with everyone's achievements and struggles. The company was transparent with its growth and I felt like my impacts were valued. Our supervisors were open-minded, professional and understanding- critical traits that made it easy to approach them with new ideas. I personally really enjoyed the professional networking and intern events that our supervisors planned throughout the summer. There were at least 2-3 events every month. We had lunch-and-learns at various offices such as Facebook HQ, Pinterest HQ, Google SF, Gusto and Open Door. Stessa hosted a Giants baseball game night at AT&T Park; it was great to be able to hang out with fellow co-workers outside of work! My personal favorite was the escape room challenge; this event helped us strengthen our teamwork. This journey with Stessa has given me the chance to grow and mature as a business professional, develop my communication skills, and gain confidence along the way. It was an exciting summer with Stessa, and I look forward to seeing Stessa grow and make its astounding impact in the real estate industry.

Cons

Due to the fact that Stessa is still at very early stages, the culture of the company is still not fully established. It’d be great to foster a sense of community within the team. A majority of the projects were interesting and rewarding, but some felt quite redundant after awhile. I was originally in charge of content production, but my role shifted more overtime to digital and growth marketing. I wish the role-to-project alignment was more accurate. But on the other hand, this gave me the opportunity to adapt and excel in other fields. I think these are all details that Stessa will improve on and small obstacles that come with the thrill of the startup culture.

Pros

* Massive market opportunity there are millions of rental property investors and surprisingly little software to make their lives easier * Seasoned tech founders who have worked together multiple times, know the space (they are real estate investors) and understand how to build successful teams and companies * Best of both worlds--nimbleness of a startup with the backing of a Fortune 500 Company (JLL)

Cons

* I'm really scratching my head here trying to think of something...

Pros

I have been enjoying working at Stessa and I am confident you will too if you are a passionate engineer who’s looking for an awesome startup experience. There are no: 1. Massive, intimidating, and convoluted code bases that will hobble you and scare you away 2. bureaucratic processes 3. 3 hour-long meetings a day 4. Innumerable email threads for no reason 5. Some person sitting over there who you have no idea what he/she is working on If you want to experience 1. Building and shipping products/features fast (on your first day 😃 ) 2. Working with engineering team that’s striving to find a balance between code quality and “getting things done” (I know, this is hard) 3. Learn and solve new problems Then you should consider working with this team. I also like how engineering team is manage here; I have been in companies where the manager was involved in every aspect (what tool to use, how to code, one-on-one every week, etc.) and I’ve also been in a company where the manager just didn’t care what I do / how I do things. At Stessa, you will be under their guidance and expertise, but they won’t babysit you so you can learn and thrive on your own too.

Cons

There are some cons too. Sometimes, your work is not fully specified and you would have to use your best judgement to fill in the gaps. This can be frustrating especially if you are used to well written, fully specified stories/feature requests. You will probably have to wear many different hats; you might have to work on things that you have no prior experience/knowledge on. You can expect changes and shifts in the midst of the project.
