Pros

SMG taught me a lot about sales and marketing, as well as some of the "inside scoop" about business operations. I think it was a very valuable way to gain firsthand experience in sales and learning to communicate with customers

Cons

The work can be very difficult at times, but it's very rewarding!!

Pros

Student Media Group present college students with a one-stop-shop internship. Instead of just focusing on teaching you the skills you need to perform the specific tasks at the company, they give you the tools you need to be successful in all aspects of life. The main foundation of the internship is communication. You learn how to connect with people of all personality types. Striking up a conversation with a complete stranger is no longer a challenge. Another key skill is problem-solving. You really learn how to think on your toes and not freak out if something doesn't go the way you originally planned. But the best thing about this internship is that it showed me how I can be successful just by being myself. There is no "perfect" way to go about doing something. You need to take the skills you're taught, apply it to yourself, and go for the gold. I wouldn't be the person I am today without this internship. P.S. It's commission based, and the earnings are uncapped! So the more you succeed, the more you make! SCORE!

Cons

You have to be ready to fail, push through adversity, and not give up. This isn't the kind of internship where you just show up at 9, clock out at 5, and call it a day. You get out what you put in. So I guess this isn't really a con, since this is what makes this internship so incredible, but some people are afraid of challenges.

Pros

There is a week long (unpaid) training that did teach me a lot. Provided food too which was a plus. Easy interview process. Looks decent on a resume

Cons

This job is 100% commission selling overpriced ad space in planners that no one at the schools use. They tell you about the commission upfront, but also only tell you about the few success stories....you most likely won't make nearly as much money as they say you will. There is no gas reimbursement which is killer because you spend nearly 40 hours a week driving around making nearly no sales. Many businesses in my field had heard of the planner before, and had extremely negative reactions towards, essentially throwing me out of the business as soon as I mentioned Student Media Group. A lot of the time I felt like I was lying to these businesses and when I did make a sale, I felt like I was almost stealing their money, because I knew no one was going to see the ads in the planners. The next year at school, I maybe saw 3 people carrying the planners around the entire year. If you're looking for an internship that will give you actual experience, you might want to look elsewhere.
