Pros

Brilliant, talented coworkers. Some of the best strategy work I've seen. Strong relationships; everyone pitched in. A real "colleagues as family" vibe (which isn't for everyone, but really worked here).

Cons

Holding company (acquired in 2018) interferes in every aspect of the business, from scheduling two-hour-long sessions to criticize years-old work, to refusing to hire freelancers while the entire staff works 100-hour weeks, to forcing the agency to take on ethically dubious clients. Most recently, ownership went from merely standing in the way of good work to an absolute s--tshow. They fired the founding CEO in the middle of post-COVID recovery and have gone through two more since. The entire team, and all major clients, have left. Aforementioned holding company founder has a storied history of harassment, racism, and sexism, and opted to keep that pattern going by repeating racial slurs in a meeting with numerous employees. No consequences whatsoever. I could say more, but what's the point? Sub Rosa was a real powerhouse in its heyday (giving two stars in its memory), but you'd have to either be insane or desperate to work here now.

Pros

Sub Rosa has a host of amazing clients. Peruse their website and you will be amazed. The office is gorgeous. Most of my coworkers are incredibly talented and friendly. Sub Rosa is located in the West Village, one of the trendiest neighborhoods in all of New York. The food is phenomenal, and you can even grab a quick brunch on some workdays since there are so many wonderful restaurants close by.

Cons

For so long, Sub Rosa was my home away from home. Now, much of the office color and joy that propelled me to the office has faded. The company has fallen apart in recent years. Most of employees I enjoyed working with the most have left or abruptly fired. The benefits of working at Sub Rosa is obvious: commuting to a beautiful office and the chance to work for incredible clients. However, the job that I signed up for is different than the one I applied for. Much of the initial appeal of working for Sub Rosa is innovation, however most of my coworkers (myself included) end up working on less challenging and engaging projects than we would find at a larger agency. The management needs a lot of improvement. There is poor communication, and Sub Rosa is by far the least transparent company I've ever worked for. There is common fear amongst coworkers that they might be let go at a moments notice. This is due to a pattern of lay-offs that we all feel reflects on the degrading office culture from a persistent employee churn and lack of new, innovative projects.
