Pros

Good for someone just starting their career, you can truly make a difference for the students, good networking opportunities for future job searching. Was a good stepping stone for me to get into a great career, and taught me a lot about how to deal with a challenging work environment.

Cons

Terrible pay for what is expected of you, Management has no clue how to manage people, outdated resources, high turnover at every campus and in the support office. Management lures teachers in with bonus program incentives that turn out to impossible to achieve. The mandatory professional development program involves watching Netflix documentaries on juicing and eating vegan and writing book reports. Owner expects employees to operate campus like it we're their own franchise, and does not compensate for things you do on your own time and resources ( marketing events, mileage for travelling and networking)

For anyone reading this I would say to work for the company and form your own opinions. Please keep in mind the older reviews on this site no longer apply. There is new management now. Here is a response to each of the reviewer's point: "Terrible pay for what is expected of you" This depends on the individual’s skills, perspective, and expectations. The pay is comparable to other educational institutions. "Management has no clue how to manage people, outdated resources, high turnover at every campus and in the support office" This was due to former management. The employees are valued and respected. Outdated resources are updated constantly, and the turnover is a lot less compared to other workplaces (with the exception of occasional teachers and tutors – mostly due to not enough hours). "Management lures teachers in with bonus program incentives that turn out to impossible to achieve." Almost half of the Campus Leaders achieved a bonus in 2014 and 2015 so the statement, "impossible to achieve" is not true. For those that did not achieve a bonus, they were one or two students away from receiving a bonus. "The mandatory professional development program involves watching Netflix documentaries on juicing and eating vegan and writing book reports." For an employee to have something against a company that encourages its employees to read or watch healthy living/nutritional and inspirational videos & books is beyond me. The list of recommended books and dvds were suggestions & recommendations from former team members, not management - employees who are not happy with the list are encouraged to propose their own development book/dvd/goals, etc. "Owner expects employees to operate campus like it we're their own franchise, and does not compensate for things you do on your own time and resources ( marketing events, mileage for travelling and networking)" Yes, Campus Leaders (CLs) are expected to run the school as if it's their own franchise/school. Unfortunately, due to poor (former) management, proper expectations were not set in the beginning. Therefore, a few CLs missed the big picture; i.e. surely we could give employees mileage, and in exchange not give the bonus to the Campus Leader when they succeed from their efforts. Unfortunately, it does take time for a Campus Leader to diversify/increase their enrolment, based on history it takes a CL 2 years to build rapport/key relationships to see results from networking. Unfortunately, former CL’s have other long term goals and look for quick results. "There's a reason you are only cornering the sponsored student market. People would never pay out of their own pocket for old, outdated programs, and for their instructor to give them the text books and say have it, let me know if you need help" Our teaching strategy is Andragogy (not pedagogy). In essence, we don’t necessarily want the adult students to be dependent on the instructor for most of the learning, instead they are trained to be self-directed and self-motivated in pursuit of understanding and developing skills (we need them to learn how to learn). Self-directed does not mean “online style learning” or “on their own”, we don’t just give out information and mark it. We teach, support, engage, direct, suggest, review and provide ongoing feedback to the students holistically. We never inform instructors to just give the text books and say, "have it, let me know if you need help." Clearly, this is the employee's own developed teaching style and opinion. A lot has changed since this employee worked at Summit. Some programs are more student lead for the reasons above and some diploma programs are instructor lead so the student gets the benefit of attending a community college (i.e. instructor lead) and a private college (i.e. smaller class size).

Pros

As a recent University Graduate from McMaster University, I was extremely happy to have received an offer of employment from Summit College. Summit College helped me learn more about office administration and student admissions, human resources roles (including, recruiting, hiring, training, screening, and so on). I am very thankful for my time at Summit as I learned a lot and the experience lead me to a new career at McMaster University. Since Summit was taken over by new management in 2015 the company has significantly improved. The company has been working on re-branding as well as re-establishing as an educational institution. Prior to the change in management, the company was not a good place to work. The new management and GM that took over had a big focus on personal and professional development of employees and valued lifelong learning. Overall, Summit is a really good place to work if you are just starting out in your career. The pay is fairly decent for someone fresh out of University or College and it is a solid, small, team environment to be a part of.

Cons

When enrollment isn't extremely demanding or hiring new employees is not a huge priority, there can be a lack of jobs to complete. For the most part, management is good at assigning special projects during slow weeks but there were times where I felt that I wasn't being challenged.
