Sylvan Learning Centers

Is this your company?

Decent place to work. Like a tutor factory. - Education Manager Sylvan Learning Centers Employee Review

Pros

The company promoted me early and raised my pay by one dollar. They also cut my ours in half with little to no notice, leaving me in a bad situation. The work is relatively flexible, and their tutoring system is easy to learn and apply. As a tutor, you come in, sit down, take a few minutes to prep, and you work with 3-4 students per hour. Hours are between 3:30 pm and 7:30 pm. You are mostly like a robot, you don't have to think and after many repetitions, you memorize the lessons anyway. Most of the children are good.

Cons

The downsides include when there are children who have behavior issues and/or are rude, disrespectful, disruptive, and distracting to the learning environment. If you are not comfortable with children, you may feel unprepared to deal with some of the children's behaviors. The lead staff will help some, but you will need to be able to set boundaries of how you will allow children to treat you. The lead staff main goal is getting families in to pay for services--they are not trying to kick any kids out based on behavior.

Pros

I enjoyed the work I did do. Working with the children and helping with teachers was fun and I got to socialize quite often with staff and students.

Cons

I was fired for missing one shift because my mother ended up in an accident. I did not get to explain myself for missing said shift and was told to think about my actions for 4 days before being let go. Extremely unprofessional.
