Pros

One of the greatest highlights of working here: the books. Exposure to pockets of art history and photography that may have been overlooked in the past. The books are the only reason I stuck it out as long as I did. Comfortable hours; for most of my time there, the atmosphere was enjoyable and I got along with most of my colleagues and advisors; building positive relationships with clients, artists/photographers and even colleagues, I appreciate those who made my time here a pleasure.

Cons

Low pay, low commission that you only get based on reaching (often extreme) sales goal expectations. Absolutely no room for growth/promotion, no matter how much you prove that you are more than capable and qualified to fulfill the position - this company will get you to do as much as possible without proper compensation... Once you request proper compensation, you will be ignored until terminated. In all of my time here, I watched people who were less qualified than I was, take a position that I should have been rightfully promoted to, for them to only be fired within a few, short months. They will take advantage of you, your knowledge and qualifications, if you allow it - especially considering that current retail management has no background/experience in publishing nor the arts - they will gun for those with gallery experience and art history knowledge, but the job position does not pertain to either and they will utilize your smarts to their benefit, but not to your profit. Heavy lifting because there are no stock employees - those carrying on sales are also unpacking shipments and restocking constantly.

Pros

Books? Meeting interesting people, interesting conversations about art, architecture, history.

Cons

Exploitative, worse pay ever, competitive environment for no reason. Evil, just evil.
