Pros
Benefits are alright such as medical, dental, vision, small pension plan. It can be a starting point for other security or possibly law enforcement, such as corrections. There may be a potential to springboard to other US government agencies. Training is provided both at centralized national facility and at home air ports.
Cons
It's very repetitive with little chance to move up. New ideas or inputs are usually not welcome or heard but not followed up. It’s very slow reacting to the external environmental changes such as social, economic and community health events. The pay is typically not very competitive with the private sector and other government agencies. There are numerous social groups or cliques that are present which has led to favoritism within the ranks, and has inhibited productivity within the work force. There are some issues surrounding racism within the workforce that are not address due to some of the social groups or cliques protecting individual transgressors or even misleading leadership to redirect their attention toward whistleblowers and/or victims. Those well familiar of the competitive nature and the ever-changing external forces that typically direct businesses to adapt or die within the private sector may have a hard time adjusting to the government environment filled with what seems like endless bureaucracy; And, there are many that are reluctant to unfreeze the culture to effect any change to workforce beliefs and behavior, other than the status quo. Affecting any positive change to productivity can be a daunting task in the face of strong resistance. If you can overcome the urge to want to make your environment a better place, then you will fit right in this framework, if not, frustration is something you will have to get used to.
