Pros

On paper Tails are doing things to support a positive culture. 9-day fortnight, living wage across all staff, dog-friendly office, remote working. The chaos of working for Tails brings you close to your colleagues and I met some brilliant and talented people.

Cons

Disregard for employee well-being when it comes to excessive workloads. Blame culture when unrealistic targets, that are set without necessary input, are not hit. No consistency of teams to allow people to settle into roles and perform their best work. Reluctance to pay for the tools you actually need to do your job. Waning values around dog nutrition and health - decisions made to prioritise short-term financial gain rather than customer needs. Bullying and discrimination rife, from leadership level right the way through the organisation. Total absence of progression. Tails stifled my career rather than benefitted it. Painfully lacking diversity and no appetite to improve this. Strategy becoming increasingly corporate with a top-down approach set by the CEO. “Shout the loudest” culture, for the few promotions that do happen and for prioritisation of business activities. Favouritism playing a big role. Pay and job role levelling far behind industry benchmarking, which paired with lack of progression and lack of L&D makes Tails a leech on your CV.

Pros

Working for a company offers steady income, benefits, and a built-in team, along with structure and chances to grow your skills and career.

Cons

Working for a company offers steady income, benefits, and a built-in team, along with structure and chances to grow your skills and career. On the flip side, you trade away some control over your time and decisions, deal with office politics and bureaucracy, and face limits on flexibility and earning potential. It’s a balance of security and structure versus autonomy and upside.
