Pros

- Impact: Life at Tempus is incredibly exciting because of our work directly improves lives. Nothing compares to hearing from doctors or patients about the way Tempus has helped them. As an engineer, I never thought I could have that kind of impact on patient lives, so it’s very rewarding and motivating at the same time. - Autonomy: We work in 6-8 person squads and build things in an iterative fashion. As a team, we get to figure out how to build something or what should be done to improve the product. It’s exciting because the work I put in directly moves the product forward rather than getting endless sing-offs and working through executive approvals. We can see progress quickly but we have the responsibility to do things the right way and plan appropriately. - team: the people here are awesome and super smart! I work with PhDs in computational biology, Kaggle Grandmasters and entrepreneurs who’ve built million (and billion) dollar businesses. Its motivating to work on problems with these people and I’m always impressed (and challenged) when I see the progress of other teams.

Cons

- Fast paced environment: we operate and build things in increments and things can change in flight. Also, there’s a lot going on, so it’s hard to keep tabs on what each team is working on. Personally, the pace is exciting because I know things are evolving quickly. - This isn’t a 9-5 job. We work hard and in some cases long hours but it’s for our patients and it’s for our teams. There isn’t busy work here but there’s a lot of work to do to achieve and build what we’ve envisioned. It has a startup hustle mentality but the progress and patient results make it all worth it.

Pros

As mentioned work is great since it is cancer research and my coworkers are amazing. Immediate leadership managers and Sr. managers are good as well but somewhat unorganised. Work life balance is good also and health insurance as long as you get BCBS PPO with copay otherwise you're screwed paying off deductible.

Cons

Pay is below industry average, and there is essentially no room to negotiate a better raise. Employees are actively discouraged from discussing compensation, and whatever leadership decides is final, there are no exceptions. If you try to escalate concerns or request a conversation with senior leadership, such as a senior director or VP, you’ll quickly find yourself getting the runaround. Leadership prefers to hide behind layers of management rather than engage directly. There is also no clear or transparent path for career advancement. Opportunities technically exist, but they are extremely limited. You can do everything right, receive a top rating of 5 on your annual performance review, and still not be promoted to manager or see any meaningful improvement in compensation. To make matters worse, the billionaire CEO and founder has said things like, “Don’t worry about pay because we’re curing cancer.” Statements like that feel incredibly out of touch when employees are earning $50k–$60k a year and receiving annual raises of only about $2,000. On top of that, equity is almost impossible to obtain. You have to fight for even the possibility of it, because stock or equity compensation is reserved almost exclusively for the C-suite and directors, with virtually nothing available for employees below that level.
