Pros

TMRS has a meaningful mission and it feels good knowing the work supports public employees and retirees across Texas. Work-life balance is genuinely good and the pace of work is slower compared to many private sector roles, which can be a nice change if you’re coming from a high-pressure environment. The benefits are solid and overall it’s a stable place to work.

Cons

Because the organization is relatively small and very tight-knit, the culture can sometimes feel a bit insular. At times it can feel a little like high school with interpersonal dynamics and internal drama. Being a government agency, things can also move slowly and processes can be more bureaucratic than what you might experience in the private sector.

Pros

Sadly there are no longer any pros to list. Be very skeptical of positive reviews as management is aggressively attempting to censor employees’ honest feedback.

Cons

The current executive director's narcissistic behavior has created an unbearably toxic and hostile work environment. Instead of fostering collaboration and mutual respect, this leader prioritizes their ego above all else, leading to a culture of fear and distrust. Employees are routinely undermined, belittled, and subjected to unprofessional behavior. The executive director's tantrums and erratic decisions have become the norm, creating a chaotic atmosphere. Constructive feedback is ignored, and dissenting opinions are met with hostility. The lack of support and constant gaslighting has led to high turnover and plummeting morale. Leadership is paralyzed by fear of the executive director, and only those who engage in sycophantic behavior are rewarded. Favoritism and blatant self-promotion have stifled professional growth and innovation. Talented individuals are either driven away or left feeling undervalued and demoralized. I cannot recommend TMRS to anyone seeking a healthy and supportive work environment. The executive director's toxic leadership has overshadowed the core mission, making it an incredibly stressful and unfulfilling place to work. Avoid this company if you value your mental well-being and professional integrity.
