Pros

Working with books and serving customers who are also interested in books. Nothing more.

Cons

1. Management had no care or empathy for workers. 2. Poor work practices included closing down multiple stores after a short period (meaning employment was unstable). Then they would reopen stores elsewhere, and in order to avoid paying any benefits to workers or reclassifying them as part time or full time workers, they would simply hire new casual workers instead of retaining current and already trained employees. I was told that the avoidance of retaining employees and ultimately reducing any chance of being forced to pay long term benefits, it was cheaper to always hire new casual workers. They won't even consider former workers to go through new interview processes. 3. Completely cold and lifeless attitude towards workers. 4. Low pay. 5. Minimum shifts. 6. Essentially working on a deadline at any location. Any of them might close at any time with limited notice.

Pros

-Met some of the loveliest people with interesting stories -Around books -Discounts on store books

Cons

-No protection when working alone -I was verbally harassed by manager in front of customers multiple times and was sent into an anxiety attack, after which he continued to harass me -When I was harassed by a customer and he hung around the store to try and learn information about me (and did manage to find out my name and find me online somehow) I was told by the owner I am not allowed to ask him to leave because asking a customer to leave 'has never been done in the history of The Book Grocer', and we are expected to find other professional ways to deal with things. I was offered to be taken off the night shifts for my protection, but told I wouldn't be given shifts in the day time to make up for that, so I continued to do the night shifts. There is no panic button, or cameras when you are working alone. We are told if there is a burglary or any threat made to us or the store that we have to call all the other Book Grocers firstly, starting with the closest to us, in case someone is going around targeting the stores. That is supposed to come before calling the police.

Pros

I thought this was the best job when I started as soon as I reached conflict and problems at work it all went downhill. I went from full support to having the owner call me up minipulate me into doing shifts.

Cons

don’t give managers any training, the owner is a minipulative woman who will call you up and take low blows at you and try and make it your fault that the things are happening when they’re obviously not. no support or help from the owner when something serious happens. The owner defends bad managers and praises them although they are causing a multitude of problems for all the staff including bullying, harassment and taking staff off the roster for good shifts (overtime, double time) and then putting them self their instead, changing shifts without notice or acknowledgment from staff. Have been unpacking boxes and boxes of new stock to see the manager sitting on their phone on Facebook when we are both supposed to be unpacking. Manager will openly call customers “pests” and talks negatively about staff and customers every shifts to make a negative and toxic work environment to work in.
