The best teaching gig in Milan - depending on who you are - Trainer The Language Grid Employee Review

Pros

- Great team - Clients you will genuinely enjoy working with - Opportunities for advancement early on - A forward thinking approach to language teaching - Young, fast growing company - Turn up and teach materials provided - Remote work available Overall I'd say if you're an experienced teacher who also happens to have some business knowledge and would like to do more than just teach - it's perfect for you. If you just love teaching, an actual school would be better.

Cons

- Low pay - Hybrid role isn't really a choice (you will definitely have to do something other than teaching) - Student cancellations are on you (you will be expected to take personal responsibility for cancelled lessons - without contacting the student directly) - Any cancellations mean you have to find something else to do - Working hours have to be logged down to each 15 minutes of the day (this is system that flatly doesn't work, with many people finding creative ways to "fill" free time) - Values and procedures shift pretty rapidly and management do sometimes contradict themselves - Management have their good and bad days, the bad days can be very stressful for junior team members. Things get personal fast

Appreciate you taking the time to share such a detailed review and for the contributions you made during your time with us. It’s great to hear that you enjoyed the team, the clients, and the structured yet forward-thinking approach to training. You’re right our model suits experienced trainers who want to do more than just deliver lessons and are interested in applying their skills in a broader business context. A few clarifications for future readers: the hybrid nature of the role is intentional and explained from the outset. Most of our trainers are business professionals who have transitioned into training and coaching roles, and they typically value the chance to contribute to business-related projects beyond teaching. We’re not a plug-in, plug-out platform something many candidates actually cite as a key reason they apply. We’re sorry you found that aspect negative rather than motivating, as it’s our intention to make trainers feel valued, trusted, and professionally engaged. Cancellations are fully paid and carry no penalties. Trainers are never expected to follow up with clients directly, unless you mean asking them if there are any issues with the course? Since 2020, we’ve continued to refine how we support the team, including simplifying time tracking, improving communication, and offering clearer guidance across the board. We know that maintaining high standards in a fast-paced environment is demanding, and we’re always working to improve how we balance that with support and clarity. Thanks again for your feedback, and we wish you continued success in your next role. Zoe Flaherty, CEO

Pros

The program is innovative, all digital, trainers don't write lesson plans, all the resources are there. Students are great and you don't have to find them yourselves. Room to take on side projects are available.

Cons

Management team of sycophants who encourage gossip/rumours. Reviews are unprofessional and emotion-driven. Gaslighting and manipulation definitely outweigh the pros.

Thanks for taking the time to share your opinion of The Language Grid. We appreciate all feedback, whether positive or constructive. I couldn't agree more that one of the best things about working for TLG is the benefit of using a state-of-the-art digital platform to deliver our courses. Teachers have a fantastic work/life balance and don't ever have to work on lesson prep during their own time. Our students are committed professionals, often experts in their field, and our team of dedicated trainers becomes their trusted advisors. While avoiding interpersonal conflict entirely can be impossible in such a dynamic and growing organisation, we strive to create a positive working environment in which our trainers feel supported and nurtured. The results of our most recent staff survey (conducted in July 2019) show we are definitely doing something right - 90% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed with the statement "I am treated fairly at TLG" and 95% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed with the statement "TLG is a great place to work".

Pros

Flexible working hours. Opportunity to meet clients from diverse backgrounds. Remote work setup can be convenient if you're looking for location independence.

Cons

Work Environment: The culture feels toxic, rooted in fear, micromanagement, and favoritism. Constructive feedback can be met with defensiveness from management. Poor Management: Leadership lacks professionalism and basic organizational skills. There's no clear communication, support, or transparency. Decisions are often erratic and based on personal bias rather than performance or merit. No Growth or Stability: High turnover is normalized. Lack of Respect: Teachers are not treated with respect or appreciation. You're expected to go above and beyond constantly without any genuine or sincere recognition or support.

Thank you for your feedback, though we’re sorry to read your comments. While every experience is valid, this does not reflect the culture or structure of The Language Grid. We have been recognised as a Best Place to Work for two consecutive years, and the majority of our team, including trainers, have been with us for over four years. Our turnover is low, and we’re proud of the respectful, high-performing culture we’ve built. All new trainers go through a structured onboarding and mentoring process, including trial sessions, peer support, and one-on-one guidance. We also hold annual face-to-face conferences to connect, grow, and share best practices. In your case, unfortunately, your trial period did not result in a permanent position, as we hold a very high standard for professionalism, delivery, and communication. We understand this may have felt disappointing, and we wish you all the best in your future roles. Zoe Flaherty, CEO
