Pros

Nothing to mention that isn't completely cancelled out by the cons, but just to be somewhat impartial... no company puts more money into your scouting than Local Foreigner. You will go on the most epic trips to destinations all over the world; but just remember, it's all to justify the below.

Cons

More people have quit this company than currently work for them. There are a lot of reasons for this, but it mostly stems from the four owners who are at times going in different directions with how they manage. They are manipulative and unappreciative. They will shower you with praise only when it benefits them. They will also take out their frustration on you. This is done in the form of the owners' private Slack channel (which they used to just leave open on their screens before the owners moved to a private office... I mean you'd plainly see what they would call other employees purely by accident!), through passive aggressive emails during your time off trying to make you feel bad for not working, or when speaking to other employees. Yes, they will ridicule you to your colleagues behind your back. Get ready to relive those middle school Mean Girls years! The number of times I've seen my colleagues, my really good friends break down crying in the office at the end of the day was just too much. That is a direct indication of an improper work/life balance. Should you bring your frustrations up to them however, they will try and spin it on you as being a "squeaky wheel" rebel who needs to pipe down and shut up. Once you have been relegated to "bad seed" status, your life becomes hell at Local Foreigner. They will watch you from the other room like Big Brother. The ultimate goal for the owners - which they speak about aloud - is to push all the work off of their plates onto their minimum wage employees so they can go wine and dine rich socialites and show off their sweatsho... I mean business. Needless to say, the culture there is poisonous. But wait, there's more! The absolute negativity that has taken hold in that office reverberates out as well. I guess part of their employee retention strategy is to instill Stockholm Syndrome into their staff as you will consistently hear them talk about how great their company is and how they are "the best in the biz", meanwhile you look around at your colleagues choking back tears and at your abysmal bank account level thinking to yourself, "well that just can't be true...". You will hear them eviscerate other travel companies because apparently putting them down makes you love Local Foreigner more? Also, every phone call with a client who "wrongs" them ends with an expletive filled tirade. It's all an incredibly petty way of propping oneself up. The absolute BEST and most hilarious aspect of Local Foreigner is how they "send off" employees who have quit. I've noticed three different tiers an employee can achieve. The top tier is a champagne toast where they awkwardly go around and say good things about you, ignoring the fact that they have derided you behind your back to other employees. The next tier is where you quit unceremoniously and you leave, never to hear from them again. THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT. The lowest tier is you quit, they complain to you that you are being unprofessional and not going out on their terms (read: you are leaving them with work to do) and they vow to try and ruin your life even after you've left. You will be subjected to frivolous lawsuit threats and harassment up until a global pandemic pops up and cripples the travel industry worldwide. There are just so many other travel companies in New York City to work for that don't do all the above. So unless you are into watching the out-of-touch owners "broth" and literally spend thousands of dollars on stupid fad diets while you beg for minimal raises because you work around the clock for them including week nights, weekends, and when you're trying to spend quality time with your family, just go find another company to work for. Seriously, you're welcome.

The Local Foreigner Response

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are sorry to hear you did not have a great experience with us – we understand that this work is not for everyone. On the other hand, we are glad you enjoyed the epic scouting trips around the world, and appreciate your observation on how rare this is in the industry. We believe scouting serves as a valuable investment for our employees to have the most up-to-date product knowledge, which empowers them to deliver the best client experience. As a company whose vision is to set the standard of excellence in the travel industry, constructive feedback is very important to us. Although we feel that many of your points are inaccurate, we are taking your comments to heart. We constantly strive to improve the experience for our clients and team members, and we are always looking for ways to get better. We have also recognized the importance of communicating workplace expectations to prospective employees and have revamped our hiring process to ensure we seek and hire employees who are a great match for us. There are seasonal periods when additional hours become necessary, and we realize this might not be ideal for everyone. The nature of our business is not consistent with a “nine to five” mindset. Our team understands that our pace of work comes with trade-offs. This is a demanding niche industry with life-changing perks, and it’s not for everyone. We thank you for your feedback, along with your contributions to the Local Foreigner and wish you the best in your future career.

Pros

I have worked as a luxury travel advisor for 7 years now at three different companies and I have to admit that the Local Foreigner is by far the most impressive in many ways. The 4 partners at Local Foreigner are driven, smart, and engaged. They each bring a different perspective and strength to the business which provides their ICs with the most well-rounded support to grow and manage their own businesses. They always make themselves available for any question you have and spend the time to make sure you are successful in every way they can. The team and energy in the office are fun, collaborative, and supportive. Questions, creativity, and ideas are encouraged and always well received by all. Their systems, databases, and marketing far surpass any in the industry. There are numerous tools and resources that Local Foreigner provides that allow you to do your work faster and more efficiently. I truly have never felt more confident in my work and proud of the company I work for than I do at Local Foreigner, especially in the time of Covid when our industry has been pushed to the lowest place it’s ever been!

Cons

There are always ways to improve as you grow, especially being a small and young company. The partners recognize this and are always asking what they can do to be the most supportive and best version of themselves, constantly willing to innovate to provide you with the best service.

Pros

The team at TLF is immensely unique and one of a kind in the travel industry. The company is led by four women and each owner brings a unique perspective and leadership style to the business. Unlike other hosting agencies out there, The Local Foreigner's dynamic leadership team focuses on business strategies that empowers all employees and ICs to succeed. The leaders methodically built a tech focused infrastructure to ensure their employees, ICs , and clients have a transparent business relationship and seamless planning experience. The Local Foreigner is a champion of ensuring quality over quantity in every aspect of the business relationship. The level of transparency between the leaders, employees, ICs and clients is one of a kind in the travel planning space. The Local Foreigner's platform for planning offers the best experience for both travel consultants and their clients. They have thoughtfully designed a career evolving platform for employees and ICs that embodies comprehensive onboarding training, ongoing education and unwavering support through a dedicated contact and open dialogue with team members. After four years of experience in the travel planning industry I am excited to finally partner with a hosting agency that provides the necessary foundation for a fulfilling and lucrative career as a travel consultant.

Cons

Look, no business is perfect. Every start-up or small business has growing pains. The key to evolving is welcoming some mistakes and learning from them to make better decisions in the future. TLF recognizes the strategies that have worked and the ones that have not worked. They've done a terrific job focusing on what strategies will empower their team to succeed, so everyone can move forward together in a positive way.
